I'm thinking about moving to vegas and staying for about 7 months. I hear the cocktail servers there make great tips. I wanted to know how easy would it be to get a job at the casinos and is it true that the servers actually make $500-$900 a night.

From what I hear, it is not easy. I know people with great amounts of experience (not with gaming though)that it took them over 6 mos to get a job.

Can you do it? With persistance, experience, knowledge, time, and money. Oh and of course, good looks. Although, I have seen some not-so-great looking waitstaff.

Good luck. Make sure you have a good amount of money to live on until you get a job or have a job secured before you get there.

My Aunt lives there and she said its like a Ghost town. Hotels are laying off employees and alot of houses for sale. Can't say that for all hotels, but with the economy the way it is...I would make sure you have some $$ to cover till you can find a job. Apartments are high because those that lost their homes need a home too. Thus high rents.

I wouldn't say millions of people living there constitutes a "Ghost Town". Just that things are definitely tightening up. Vegas, as well as many other cities is feeling the pinch and preparing to ride the storm.

Just make sure you do what you need to so that you can ride the storm out too, instead of drowning in it. No matter where you are.

Far from a ghost town Id say. You wont catch me trying to drive down the strip. Its still crazy packed. As for the cocktail job, from what I understand it is incredibly difficult right now for anyone. Including those with experience working in a strip casino.

Cool, why only 7 months though?

Some do, some don't. Some make great money, some make $10/nite... it depends where you are working, what kind of cocktailing it is(casino floor, vip room, nightclub, restaurant, etc), what shift you have, how you look, and a myriad of other factors

NOT easy at all. Vegas is getting hit hard, and casinos have alreayd fired thousands and will be laying off more. Unless you are exceptionally good looking, don't count on coming here to get a good job right off the bat

This is a funny myth perpetuated by gossip and rumor. Only the top 0.001 percent, as in a few of the girls at the best nightclubs, and a few cocktailers in the vip areas of some casinos(high roller rooms) and a few other spots make money like that regularly

I can guarantee that you will not get any of those jobs upon moving here briefly unless you look like Megan Fox but with a bigger chest Sorry, but its not easy out here, and 7 months won't get you too far in this town. That being said, there is still opportunity for anyone willing to prepare. Get a solid base on alcohol and wine(thorough bartender's knowledge) and you'll be better prepared than alot of the girls here. Half of the girls I work with barely know whats in a Rum & Coke

Good luck either way

Weird thing about an economic downtown is the high end places do fine as do the low end places. It's the vast middle that has trouble. Goes for casinos, restaurants, retailers etc. This is not just a Vegas thing, happens everywhere.

Tell your aunt to get out more, every weekend so far, the tourist areas are packed. Apartment rents are not high, in fact, they are quite reasonable compared to other places around the country. Comeback Kid was pretty much spot on in his/her post so proceed accordingly, lulu.

Do some research, visit here first and see if you can garner some interviews/housing, etc. Bring money to live on for quite a few months. See if you like it here first, people don't LIVE on the Las Vegas Strip. We live in neighborhoods just like you do right now.

Don't move here blindly thinking it's the land of milk and honey, it is not.

However, moving here after your fact finding trip and doing your homework..setting up your life (job, housing, some money saved and plenty money for food-rent-car for a few months)...once all those things are in place here, then, and only then, will be you be happy in Las Vegas and glad you made the move.

Good luck!

Not sure...but I think the OP meant that she's been thinking of moving to LV for about the last 7 months. You know the younger gen with their text messaging mindset.
