Legalized prostitution in Las Vegas? - Las Vegas- msnbc.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28796126/ - broken link)

I think they should allow it. Do brothels cause any problems on the counties that allow them to operate? I never hear anything negative about the impact they have on the surrounding community.

If you have ever checked out the gigantic section in the LV yellow pages under the heading "Entertainers" - you would be naive to think that all those adds are really just for stripteases and "massages". We used to show that 70 pages or so to our visiting relatives as a novelty - most found it amusing. People who want an actual therapeutic massage go to a salon or day spa - not to an "entertainer". I definitely get the impression that prostitution is alive and well in LV (and plenty of other cities too). I agree with MomMom - tax it and regulate it medically to minimize disease spread. I do think its a trashy activity and wouldn't want my daughter doing it, but if it is consenting adults who wish to degrade themselves accordingly - they're going to do it regardless of whether it is legal or not. Tax it - maybe they could put those taxes toward a better education system

Once heard a Sr Executive from Marriott do 15 minutes about how you regulate prostitution in a hotel. The object was clear...you wanted it available but not to the point of being noticeable.

Las Vegas has a similar problem...our guests want it but we don't want it flaunted. The impact on conventions and meetings of legalizing prostitution would likely be sizable. And it is clearly present but hidden and subdued by the legal status. It is going to be much harder to contain if legal.

Now we could do the really nasty thing and tax it without legalizing it. No particular reason you can't do that. Then you can lock up the ladies for not having a current tax receipt.

How is that for being practical if quite unprincipled.

Pole Tax...the bigger the pole, the higher the tax.

One wonders...if you have sex with a hooker without paying her, is it rape, or shoplifting?

Hmmm...a good question. Somehow the government always seems to figure that one out. As already stated, a pole tax would work, with extensions available to those come up short. A luxury tax would also work.

but better is to legalize it...tax the revenues and require a [not inexpensive] license to hook.

I wonder if it'd be an elective ROP class taught to high school seniors, 18 and up? Either that, or at CSN and UNLV. A soapland would be nice.
