Ok so Ive been reading and people are saying its hard to get a job in the casinos unless you know someone. *Its not what ya know, Its who ya know*

Does that theory still apply with the business side of the hotel/casino? In the H/R,accounting,finance,etc,etc?

Thank You

AZtoLV

Pretty much. There have been layoffs on that side; however, the best advice is to be persistent in applying to all the locations as things move pretty quickly. M resort opens in March, City Center will be hiring soon, and people move to other positions quickly.

Yes, absolutely it does.
It is a tight knit group there.
But keep trying, and be persistent.
They want to know that you want to work there.

Generally speaking.....entry level jobs dont require knowing anyone or anything [JK] The "Know Someone" jobs are the upper management positions...ALTHO.....knowing someone is NEVER a bad thing.....

A strange thing about Las Vegas is that...in lower to mid range positions....experience doesnt count for much.....for example....If yo had worked for 10 years in Room Reservations at the MGM and applied at the Four Queens or Fitzgeralds or any other NON MGM property in town....your starting pay would be exactly the same as if you had never of a hotel..... Reason being....every property uses a differant computer system...has different rules and you have to be trained from scratch.....

How are you supposed to get in if you don't know the computer systems that they use? I've got 12 years experience (3 as PBX Operator, 9 as Front Desk Clerk), but those properties were small, compared to Vegas, and had little to no computers in place.

I applied online with MGM Mirage for a PBX Operator type spot, and was shot down immediately. They wanted supervisor experience, but they don't say that in the job listing. It's also a lot of fun when you apply to places, and don't hear anything from them, not even a "Thanks for applying." It makes you feel like you don't even exist.

hypothetically speaking if I were to have 1(yr) experience in retail, 2(yrs) experience as an administrative assistant, and 2-4(yrs) experience as a front desk clerk at a 4 star hotel I wouldn't get hired unless I knew "someone" on the inside?

its not that easy to land a hotel job... i have 16yrs management/customer service experience, applied to the venetian... they called and wanted an interview... then an email came saying the position was on hold... then they called again saying they wanted an interview because of my experience.... then the position was gone completely.. no interview....
that being said... it was a front desk position....
with this economy, walmart's looking pretty good.
