The only times I've been to Vegas I never really got out of the main casino areas. I did take side trip to the Dam, but it was a long time ago. So, my question is about the general topography; Are any of the residential areas in elevated areas, with nice views etc. If so, are any more apt to have custom size lots rather than cookie cutter grids.

Thanks.

There are numerous developments in the higher elevations with remarkable strip views. Virtually all directions have elevations well above the strip.

Lots of places have large lots up to acreage. Generally higher priced. Large lots with good views cost a lot.

The valley is like a bowl so most of the residental areas on the outskits of town are elevated and have nice views of the strip.

West Summerlin in Las Vegas, Black Mountain and 7 Hills areas in Henderson have great views.
Also some custom lots with great views can be found behind the Fiesta Casino in Henderson.
Also an overlooked area with great views is the far east side by French Man's (Sunrise) Mnt by Hollywood Blvd. I assume the lots there are cheaper.

I think I have heard that the valley runs on a "simi-slope" from East-West(Hollywood-Town Center)Hollywood and the Eastern Valley has a higher elevation than Town Center and the Western Valley.

Is that true?

Nope. Airport is right around 2100 feet. The intersection of 215 and Summerlin Pkwy is at 3000. The high part of Henderson - Anthem say...is a little above 2600.

Hollywood is about 2500/2600.

Even lots of NLV is above 2400.

So you can have great views from any direction. Best overall views I have seen (non-high rise) are from some of the cliff hangers in Sun City Summerlin. There are some similar places in the Vineyards and some of the other Summerlin cliff dwellers. There are also some spectacular views in Seven Hills and Anthem and along Hollywood in the east.

For a really superb view though it is very hard to beat One Queensridge. The strip places are too close to get the full view...though there you can see the detailed action.

Las Vegas, if I understand it correctly, is not in a Valley, it is on the side of an alluvial plane which pours out of the canyons of the Spring Mountains, and slants from west to east. What is so far developed starts at around 3,000 feet and slides on down to about 1500 along the LV Wash. For many years, Ch-3 was at Boulder Highway and DI. Our tower next to the building was 550 feet high. The top of the tower was lower than the Strip. There were very few homes on the west side of the Strip, except for those near Washington between Rancho and Jones. Those people had a hard time picking up Ch-3 (it was Ch-2 in those days) since they were higher than the transmitter antenna. No one in those days wanted to build up on Sunrise Mountain where the town dump was located (both the official dump and the unofficial dump). I think the first residence was either what we former Donrey employees called "the Castle", built by Don Reynolds, deceased former owner of the RJ, KORK-TV & radio, and Donrey Outdoor, or it might have been Wayne Newton from rumors that I recall. It was a few years before anyone else built up there, but now it is all built up, and they do have the best views in town. In most parts of town what might have been a nice view is usually blocked by another house.
