Hi,

I'm moving to Vegas from L.A. in a couple of weeks. When I called Nevada Power, they said that I need to come into the office w/ 2 pieces of ID & pay a deposit.

This is really strange since my credit was approved for my new apartment.

When I called Cox to get my cable hooked up, they ran my credit and it came out fine and I didn't need to pay any deposit. I mentioned what happend with Nevada Power and the operator said Nevada Power was really strict.

I have really good credit, so is it normal for Nevada Power to do this for out-of-towners?

Thanks for any info!

Almost any place you move, the local power company requires a letter of credit from the previous power company you paid your bills to. In Las Vegas it is an entirely different deal because it is such a highly transient
population here. So many many people skip town without paying the final bill.

All these people who are abandoning their homes here, do you think they paid their final bill? But now where ever these people end up and their new power company requires a letter of credit, the people will not be able to get one and will have to pay a deposit like you. The deposit is returned after exactly one year if you made all your monthly payments on time.

So yes....they are extra strict here. The b*****d ________ criminals.

I have a FICO score of over 820 and had to pay a deposit. It's normal.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the info.

I don't mind paying the deposit, I just got a little worried that my credit score wasn't good enough, but if that's the norm, I'm fine with it.

Thanks!

I got a letter of credit from SCE and the power company didn't require the deposit. I did have to pay a deposit for water and gas, though.

Welcome to Las Vegas

It gets refunded after a certain period of on-time payments. If you ask for it back, you can get it sooner. If you forget about it, they automatically apply it as a credit on your bill after something like 18 months.

I paid a deposit for Nevada Power when moving here from Utah years ago. Got it back after a year. Can't remember the amount, it's been too long.
Didn't have to pay it when moving across town.
Cox cable tried to get another deposit out of me after my move to Aliante, but i spoke to their supervisor when they were still here and they told the workers i didnt have to pay it again.
That one would have been $125.
