New Guy in Town
Just arrived in Vegas from Chicago suburbs, age 24 going to UNLV in the fall. Currently living in weekly suite looking for job and apartment. Have a few basic questions.

What are some good non-casinos jobs? Any suggestions for employment, I have worked as a pizza delivery driver for the past 8 years so I don't really have much experience in anything. I have two years of community college with business classes, but no degree yet. I am going to UNLV for business. I am looking for a semi-decent job, but I don't want to work at a casino.

I plan on getting an apartment, my GF and her friend are coming in July so I will have 2 roomates and am looking for a 3 BR. The places I've targeted are Henderson, S of the Airport, and SW Vegas. I want to live in a decent area, but not be to far from UNLV. Henderson seems good, I've looked at 2 places so far Galleria Palms and Copper Hills. Both on whitney ranch drive north of sunset. They seem decent, anybody know anything about them?

Last question, are there any .50/$1 poker tables in Vegas? I love playing poker, but without a job right now I really can't afford to have fun playing $1/$2.

If you are planning on going to UNLV I would definitely recommend staying in the southeast, either south of the airport or even out into Green Valley & Henderson. The commute accross town from the southwest just isn't worth it. You will find some affordable places on Las Vegas Blvd. South, but I would definitely try to live a little farther east if you can.
I think looking for a job waiting tables or even bartending would be a good place to start working. There are a lot of chain restaurants out near the Galleria Mall in Henderson, and there are obviously restaurants in each of the casinos. The District at Green Valley Ranch also offers a lot of restaurants, as well. Waiting tables at night will allow you to take classes during the day but still make a decent living. You may have to break into bartending by being a barback first. In case you haven't heard, we have ridiculous hurdles that you have to jump over in order to serve or bartend. You will need to get a Health Card, TAM card (alcohol management) & Sherriff's Card for gaming (if there is a single slot machine around).
While I don't play poker I suspect the cheapest you will find will be Downtown (on Fremont St.) or at a smaller off-the-Strip place. Check out a place like the Fremont, El Cortez or Fitzgeralds during a weekday.
Even though you are a Chi-Sox fan, I wish you well. Hopefully my Indians can turn things around and catch you guys soon. Good luck. By the way, if you look around you will find a few bars that are dedicated to the Sox, Bears, Bulls. etc. if you are interested.

If you're going to working as a pizza delivery guy, you really can't afford to be playing poker at all. IMO, that's the last thing you should plan on doing.

Thanks Doug, even though you're an Indians fan you're good for something, haha just kidding.

I'm glad to hear about the Chicago themed bars, I'll have to find one of these.

One question, how do I go about getting a TAM and health card?

Poker is a hobby, as long as I play within my limits it is a lot cheaper than other forms of leisure such as seeing movies or going out drinking. I'm good enought to break even over the long run.

Now that was some great help on the work cards! I would recommend just getting those cards out of the way now because you will most likely need them in your job hunt. I know you are trying to stay away from gaming, but it would be a good idea to get a Sherriff's Card, too. As I'm sure you have seen, we have slot machines pretty much everywhere so a card is needed for jobs that seem like they have nothing to do with gambling.
While the Chicago-themed bar might not have much appeal now, in the fall when the Sox are making a playoff run or the Bears are kicking off their season, it is great to have a bar where everyone is cheering for your team. Sports books are great, but half the crowd will be pulling for the other guys - no fun. Good luck with everything.

just an fyi

the work cards (TAM, sheriff's, and health) can be expensive. don't spend your money right now going out and getting all of them. some jobs do not require all 3. if you find a place that wants to hire you on, they will let you know what cards they will require and provide you with the necessary paperwork for them.

Heres a little more info I didnt include in my last post

TAM = $20.00 or Free if you are unemployed, have a Nevada ID or Drivers License, and an employer willing to employ you a minimum of 30 hours per week. **Good for 4 years

Health = $40.00 - $50.00 depending on the card needed ** Good for 2 or 3 years

Sheriff (This is the pricey one) = Work card $45.00 + FBI background check $45.00 + Fingering printing $10.00 per card (Gaming finger printing is $40.00) ** Good for 5 years.....** need future employer referral to obtain one
