Another thought for a collective effort. What are legitimate reasons to come to Las Vegas? I can think of three no four...

1. I am a Tourist...I will donate money and go home.

2. I have a job and they will pay me suitable money if I move to Las Vegas.

3. I need a job and I have a skill set that will align with the Las Vegas Model.

4. I have sufficient resources that I really don't need to work and I want to move somewhere that is interesting and warm.

I think that covers it.

There are no categories for...

1. My friend is mean to me and I need a new environment.

2. Life sucks. Maybe Las Vegas will be better.

3. I am a loser. Maybe I will be less of a loser in Las Vegas.

4. Everybody hates me at home. Maybe Las Vegas will be better.

5. My partner and I don't get along. Maybe we will do better in Las Vegas.

6. I am really good at poker. I am ready to win it all.

7. I play poker pretty well. I will make my living taking a few tourists.

8. I am gorgeous. I can make it at Pure. (This ocassionally works)

9. Been playing in pickup bands for 20 years. Gotta go good in Vegas.

Anyway you get the idea. Entries for either list are welcome.

LOL! Olecapt!
Especially #'s 7 ans 8, I do run into these types more often than not.
And #5...
Let me just say, I have become friends with many transplants and from the stories I've heard and what I've seen it seems Vegas is not the place to come if you are in a casual relationship. It's the #1 way to ruin it.
Unless, your relationship is REALLY strong. If you are not doing well where you are, don't even think about coming here. Vegas has too much temptation.

Whatever happened to the pioneer spirit of heading west and starting a new life? Sure, you should have a plan, a job, maybe some spare wagon wheels and horses. In the end, it's your decision and don't let these old folks scare you off from trying to fulfill your hopes and dreams.

Hey...you got that mad desire to lower your head and run full tilt into a block wall head first...go for it...

Don't let any of those old farts talk you into wearing a helmet...get the full experience.

what about "The Air Farce orders you here but you'll fool them and fall in love with the place and stay for the next 45 or 50 years."

Really! I'm still in my twenties, well at least for a couple of more months!

The above is the #1 reason people come have always come to Nevada. I did it, and most people I know did it. You have confidence that you can be successful wherever you go and Las Vegas is the most interesting and exciting place you can think of. We decided that if it didn't work out we could always go back home, and we never had to go back, even though things at times got tough.

There are way too many #2's (in the second category list)moving out here. They do eventually move on, but not before trashing Las Vegas, nevada, and everyone in it for months if not years before they finally move on. lol

#4 in the first list is the only good reason to move here - or to California, for that matter. The West isn't particularly welcoming to pioneers any more, it prefers retirees who bring their own money and have a willingness to pay a significant percentage of it to support massive social welfare systems. If one is young and ambitious, the real opportunities are overseas in countries free of America's recent fetish for crippling taxation and regulation of small business. Shanghai is worth a long look.

That said, Las Vegas is probably the closest thing we have left in America to a "Last Frontier", so maybe it's worth the gamble for people with a clear vision of where they want to go.

And the posters here who tell us that Michigan winters suck and they have $1,000 saved and they are hoping to get a job as a bartender at Wynn and they just rented an apartment at Twain and Swenson and is it a nice neighborhood are not those people.
