Had a friend at work last week who came home from Cali to a hot scorching house. They called in a large local company and were told that their compressor was shot and that they needed a new unit. They were quoted 11 grand from this company. The next day at work, he was telling me about it and I urged him to get a second opinion. I also told him not to tell the next company about the previous problem reported. Anyway, his wife called another company out and the problem turned out to be a bad capacitor. The total repair ran them 280 bucks!
This type of nonsense happens way more than it should and I urge anyone here with ac issues to always call for a second diagnosis if the repair comes in as something really expensive.
Capacitors are easy to test and its also the first thing a tech should check if the fan or compressor is not running.
By the way, if they spent 11 grand on a new unit from these people, at least they would get a free flash light. Hint hint.

And they would get a new capacitor. Too bad that show to catch a contractor doesn’t catch these scammers in action.

No different than auto mechanics that rip off customers who don't get second opinions. Or doctors for that matter.

That‘s the interesting part about home warranties - the insurers of course are highly motivated to find a cheap and quick fix and the home owner of course is motivated to find a comprehensive and expensive solution.

Same here. Plus many people on the NextDoor app give them bad reviews and mention how this company is known for price gouging.
