You could rent a car if you're going to be in either city for more than a few days and want to explore the surrounding area, but that too could be expensive. Given that it only takes 4 hours to drive between LA and Vegas, I'm more inclined to drive so I have my car to get around once I get there.
I'd always drive too. However.

Most visitors stay on the strip or downtown, lose a few hundred or thousand gambling and spend what money they have left buying $2 made-in-china souvenirs.

How much do you spend on gas with the current prices?

I haven't driven any distance (LA or otherwise) for a long time. My car gets about 21 mpg on the highway, I'm not too concerned about the cost of gas vs having to rent a car to get around. I've vacationed in lots of places where I didn't have a car and managed to get around via some form of transportation. LA is so big and sprawling and I like to go lots of different places there, I can't imagine not having a car to get around.

You really can't assume that a heavy high speed rail system over several hundred miles will be like the monorail. Yes, they'll have an enclosed, air conditioned station at each stop. I'd put money on that.

Meanwhile...have you actually used Uber/Lyft out of LAS? I have, and given the current shortage of drivers, it's difficult to schedule your rideshare to meet you. And, it's a confusing multi-lane mess with huge numbers of tourists waiting where they're not supposed to wait, and being yelled out to move back every five minutes or so by unfriendly people herders. All outdoors, on a level of the parking garage, full of hot concrete at 110+ degrees.

I'd take a waiting room inside a train station over that mess every time.

If you should ever see a light rail line operating in this conservative city, consider it to be an hallucination!

Train is now scheduled to go to Rancho Cucamonga, a huge upgrade. Still sounds like a lot of potential pitfalls in getting the financing done, but if they truly are going to build over the Pass then this has a shot of working.

This makes more sense. Existing train service Metrolink Metrolink Map covers the five major counties of Southern California.
