We just had our rooftop combo AC/Heating unit replaced last weekend by Air Supply. It went out on Friday night, a service tech came by Saturday morning, and by noon they had a crane here and installed a new unit. We've used them for several years now for 2x year servicing. The unit was the original one from 1996 so it had a long life.

The new one is a 5 ton Amana with a 10 year warranty on the AC and 20 years on the heating unit. Not exactly cheap, but about average from what others in the neighborhood have paid. I thought that less than 24 hours from having the old one bite the dust to having a new one up and running was pretty good, especially on a weekend, and they did a damn fine job.

Glad it worked out for you. You had the good fortune -- if you can call it that -- to have the unit go out when it did rather than in mid-July, when all the HVAC companies are bombarded with work.

One of the more important things you can do to prolong the life of your unit is to frequently change your air filter(s), and do not install the expensive/restrictive units. Some people mistakenly think the purpose of the disposable air filter is to help keep their house clean from dust. It is not. It's purpose is to protect the HVAC unit itself, and a highly restrictive filter puts more stress on the HVAC system. A good low-end filter, changed monthly (or more often if needed) will help prolong the life of your new unit.
