I've only been in Nevada a couple years and went to the DMV once when I bought a new vehicle. I just bought a used motorcycle from a private seller and need tags. How does the registration process work with the small, local businesses like smog check places?

I don't think they can do new registrations. You'll possibly need a VIN inspection (if previously was registered out of state). You'll get a new plate when you go to DMV.

Registration

The buyer must register the vehicle at a DMV office within 30 days. Make an appointment at our offices in Carson City, Las Vegas or Reno.

Except all DMV offices are closed until sometime in the future. To OP I would carry the purchase documents with you and then do not worry about it. The police will almost certainly not ticket you during the virus period.

My point was meant to be that one cannot do a new registration at a smog check business, but you are correct again and are ON FIRE!

I wasn't clear on that point. Someone else suggested that I carry the title and insurance docs and not worry about it but I just feel weird riding without plates.

Say some more EA. Was this a new purchase from a dealer? Did the dealer have a role or how did it work...

Some dealers offer this service at a cost. Similar to how you can pay someone to do your registration for you. You can RENEW your registration at a smog place for about $15 or just go home after the smog check and do it yourself online for free. Regardless it's obvious this does not apply to the OP.

One thing OP, make sure you have a motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license.

I was asking EA if it is possible to register a car nowadays. I do not think there is any way you can register a newly bought private sale. But maybe there is an out for a new purchase.
