I found these forums over Google and decided this would be a great place to ask this question. Please help me out if you know. I'm currently using alternate programs to get my high school diploma because; the high schools in the valley have really gone to hell. I have my driver license and in order to afford insurance on my car I would like to get a job.

I'm currently 16, shall be 17 this June. I keep looking around but, can't really find anything. I used to volunteer at Sunrise Hospital as well so I have some clerical experience, mostly receptionist work (screening calls for managers while helping people in the front and looking over applications and stamping them). I really want a receptionist/secretary job because I know I can do it extremely well.

Does anyone know of a place that would hire a 16 year old besides fast food? I was really just curious, this is kind of a last shot before I go apply and try to start my first job.

All responses would be extremely helpful and appreciated.

Thank you.

If you take a CPR course and get certified, I believe some of the health clubs around town hire young folks your age for various positions..

Thanks but, this really doesn't help with my initial question. Most places in the valley have a policy about hiring 18 year olds only; I was curious if you had heard about places that would hire 16 year olds.

If not I'll probably just go to the Charleston outlets which are really much too far or fast food where my people skills would pretty much go to waste. I already have a career plan so I think I'll just take some dead end jobs until I obtain my diploma.

I think fast food though, is my only option.

That's a great idea, getting certified is pretty simple and doesn't cost all that much. I'll dig a little deeper and see which places I can find.

Thank you.

That diploma is irrelevant to getting a job. It's just a useless piece of paper. As you saw by the post a few back on child labor laws, you have limited choices. You also know that you will be earning just $6.33/hr with no benifits or $5.30/hr with any benifits. That hardly buys a car or insurance here let alone both. But you are to be applauded for your motivation to try.

You also say you have good people skills and are very experienced in clerical work. You might well be, but an employer does not see it that way. They are thinking how can you have any experience at just 16......how do you know if you have people skills at just 16. And best of all: "you kids think you know everything".

Jobs are tough to come by. Fast food place should always be hiring but that has to be just about the most aweful job a human has to endure. And the employer will probably stick you on sink duty rather then serving customers.

Maybe you are trying to grow up too fast. Are you here in this city alone? How about sticking with the volunteer job a tad longer while bugging the head clown to be hired. Work you way up. Todays floor moppers can be tomorrows cheif of maintenance.

And dont even think of those employment agencies. They collect $25/hr from employees while paying minimum wage to you. And you will be the only English speaking legal to be there.

I have personally seen strangers walk up to construction trailers on new home sites and ask if they can do anything. They might be instructed to sweep the curbs or change the light bulbs in the model homes for a flat $50 a day. But all the new home builders have layed off 80% of staff already.

mod cut: text removed

Good luck to you.

This is a good idea. For the summer months, all the city/county public pools hire Life Guards and you must know CPR for it. They pay up to $12/hr because it is a Govt job. Many young people apply but have to get CPR certified after they are hired. If you are already certified in advance you will be way ahead of the others.

Check with the Hospital you volunteered with on their usually FREE classes.

I don't know if things are different in Clark County, but when I was living in Reno (Washoe County) my then 17 yr old son was working in the fun center of a casino. Just a suggestion.

First of all, starting your working career in a fast food restaurant is a great way to get work experience for a teenager and no kid should ever turn up their nose at it. But you might check with ESD at Nevada JobConnect. I'm no longer working there, but a one time we had a program for teens. http://detr.state.nv.us/

Was that Circus Circus? I think they hire teens here too.
