Just got back from LV today. I am curious, what kind of industry/employment does LV have... besides the obvious entertainment, conventions, (endless) construction, etc. Surely there's got to be some cubicles and such out there somewhere?

Not that I am looking to move my wife and kids out or anything

There is some light manufacturing and warehousing. For instance, Walmart has a distribution center here and there may be others. There are zillions of trucks on the road. There are some really large call centers, both inbound and outbound. AAA is one, some that do tech support, Citibank has one with about 2000 employees. Citi does the credit card statements from here too. The health care industry is alive and doing well here. I counted in my head 11 or 12 hospitals which are all surrounded by every type medical facility you can think of as well as hundreds of doctor's offices. Just about everything there is in retail. If you can't find it here they don't make it. Up until recently I think we had something like 18,000 realtors, and all the things that surround that industry such as banking, title companies, etc. Not sure how many miners live in Vegas...there are some...but mining is the 2nd largest industry in Nevada. Nellis AFB is the Air Force version of the Navy's top gun training program. Top gun is also in Nevada in Fallon. The Nevada test site isn't what it used to be since that idiot Clinton ended testing but there is still a lot of activity out there and most of the workers commute from Las Vegas. I just hope we haven't lost that brain trust next time some country like Russia or China decides to heat up the cold war again. There is a wide variety of jobs here.

I know you are aware of the "obvious" entertainment and convention business, but most people would be surprised at the variety of occupations, and the thousands, and thousands of employees it takes to do what we do in Las Vegas. For instance, there are thousands of people who work in the convention business. Every single day you'll see hundreds of 18 wheelers loading and unloading the supplies needed to put on trade shows at the various convention facilities. THE Las Vegas Convention Center is the largest in the US and probably the world. But several hotels have convention centers too that are as large or larger than most major cities' main centers, as well as centers in Henderson, North Las Vegas, and downtown Las Vegas. It takes thousands of people to do all the jobs necessary to set up and dismantle nearly 4,000 conventions and trade shows a year, from the ladies that hand out the badges to carpenters, carpet layers, furniture and equipment movers and installers, electricians, TV production people, show producers, models, product demonstrators...you name it. If you watch the show Las Vegas you only see a fraction of the people it takes to run a hotel, and we have more hotel rooms than any other city. We also have something like 11 of the 14 largest hotels in the world, and the three most expensive hotels in the world. The employee's private area underground at the Bellagio alone is a city in itself where the hotel has taken care of just about every need a worker might have during a shift, including medical, childcare, even dry cleaning and meals.

Of course there are engineering firms, architect firms, every fake rock or plant you see in landscapes was made right here, and there are at least ten million lawyers...at least it seems like it with something like 300 pages of them in the phone book. Then there is UNLV, and the Clark County School District is something like the 5th or 7th largest in the US. Racing has become very big. The track seats over 100,000. Carroll Shelby put his plant out at the track and manufactures his Cobras out there. So, if anybody tells you there are no jobs in Las Vegas, tell them you know better.

Wow, great answer! I did of course expect some logistics/infastructure for instance in the casinos and convention center (I said to my wife, an accountant, well all these places need acountants too). Speaking of that, do you know anything about the inner workings of the hotels, such as 9-5 jobs as, say an accountant or purchasing agent, etc. Jobs not so much for laborers but for those with degrees.

Only that they have those jobs too and they are just like anyplace else. I have met several HR people and they seem to have the best office jobs.

But, it sounds like you are from the east coast. Since I'm from the east coast originally where we worked 9 to 5 with a paid lunch hour (or half hour if you didn't go out for lunch), I have been griping for years about having to work 8 to 5 with an unpaid lunch hour. I think it is the reason New Yorkers have more energy than we do...they have a shorter work day.

I've read that the Clark County school district is one of the largest employers in the area.

I'd think so. It's the 5th largest school district in the country with somewhere in the neighborhood of 300,000 kids.

I had a degree and no juice when I got my job. Juice is no more an issue in this town than it is in any other once you get away from the casinos.
