Don't use the example of an entertainment director ...I KNOW too many of them here in town WHO WOULD HIRE THE BAND FROM BUTTE, MONTANA!

Up by my rental near Sun City Summerlin, the couple a few doors down...she is a dealer at Paris, he is valet at Santa Fe....both full time and long timers in their fields here in LV. They have two kids...

They are able to afford a 5 bedroom house (bought two years ago, during the boom, conventional fixed mortgage, a move up house) take vacations, enjoy the city, go out to eat frequently...etc, etc....

The tips they get are fantastic...they are both VERY GOOD at what they do.....

So, I agree with your theory Greg...

I just don't know if the climate for good tips prevails in this current economic meltdown...so that is something to consider if seeking employment in tip supplemented positions...

Tips are already down in LV. The jobs you have described are VERY average in tip income. I would estimate, their combined income as $80k/yr. Two incomes make a huge difference. For example, a dealing job at Paris, I would estimate $45k/yr. Very run of the mill for LV. But, $45k/yr for the same job in Biloxi, would be the top job.

Oh, I agree. Probably the same theory holds true for Atlantic City...

To the best of my knowledge, AC tip earners have never been close to LV. There has never been a dealing job in AC anywhere close to $100k. And, yes, I would think tip earners everywhere are making less, not so much due to the individual, but rather a decline in volume. Still, LV is the tip capital of the world.

thanks for the response. my background is in both cocktailing and special event coordination. truth be told, i think if you're good at what you do, you can do well in this business just about anywhere. when i'm cocktailing here (seattle), i'm making up to 1200 in a shift with grat. averaging 45%. i am well-educated, bright, personable, attractive, and driven to succeed. most of all, i have my head on straight.

i am not one of those people who is expecting to come there and succeed right off the bat, but to hear that i wouldn't be able to at ALL because i don't know anyone or everyone, i think, seems more of a raw deal for the casinos themselves than for myself. it's not that i have a large ego (far from it), but just that i know what i can offer an employer.

but, i guess we'll see. i'll give an update in a month when i head down. thanks again for the info.

P.S. Also, the reality of the situation is that the economy is bad everywhere right now. It's really a matter of getting in where you fit in.

Don't expect to earn $1200/shift in LV. A $300k/yr job in LV would mostly be limited to illegal activities.
