I will believe this when I see it:

Passenger rail project between Southern California and Las Vegas has a new backer

Brightline trains would take two hours to cover the 185 track miles from Barstow to Las Vegas, at an average speed of 92 mph.
The appeal of a Victorville-to-Las Vegas system remains to be seen. From Victorville, a driver would have another three hours to Las Vegas — meaning the Brightline system might save just an hour of transit time, depending on traffic.
This quote from the article is what's disappointing. What's the true appeal if it were only to save about an hour?
I am in favor but wish it were higher speed.

For some drivers on I-15 a 92mph top speed would be a slow down.

The middle of the desert would seem to be the perfect place to drive as fast as possible. I've driven that stretch of the 15, it's silly not to, except for the CHP.

I can see the appeal Sunday nights, especially like this past Labor day weekend. Returning to LA to only drive from Victorville instead of bumper to bumper from Primm could fill a few trains, but regular weekdays? LV to Victorville is the easiest part of the ride.

Please someone explain. Why Victorville? What is it about Victorville? Thanks.

Victorville is the cultural center of San Bernardino County, a frequent vacation destination for residents of Baker.

For a serious answer, I'm guessing that there is a rail right of way that can be used, that terminates in Victorville.

Unless someone can figure out how to build a relatively fast train that is a one seat ride from something like downtown or west side LA to Vegas, this is a non-starter.

Yeah that was the first time I ever went 100 in my Camaro, driving it back from Vegas to LA. I had looked behind me and in front and in one of those really rare moments on the road there was nobody. I couldn’t see anything but desert, so I figured if not now, then when? It was anticlimactic to say the least, the car handles 100 so easily and the road is so open and straight that it felt like 70 haha.
