I hope that I'm asking this on the right forum. My husband and I are planning a move and at first I thought we were going to be buying a business plan n the south east but an opportunity has come up in Boulder city. I have always lived in the southeast, never been further west than Arkansas. My husband has visited the area as a child.

What we are looking for is a nice area to rent to see if we like the area. Our kids are grown, so schools aren't an issue.

We are looking for a safe neighborhood, we can afford up to 2k a month rent. I am an artist, so I would like an area that has some kind of creative community I could be a part of.

Also, since I had never even visited the west, could you give me some idea of what it is like to live there?

I don’t live there, but I have a friend who does. The community is close knit. No gambling establishments. They are going through changes right now because of the new overpass that directs traffic away. I guess the biggest questions would be: Can you tolerate extreme heat? Do you need a reliable income source or is your art a supplement?

We are here. There are 95% good neighborhoods in Boulder City, and only a few 'sketchy' areas (obvious), but our PD is well staffed for a small city. Rent in that price range is definitely an option, utilities are less than the Vegas/Henderson, city owned utilities department. Most houses are electric, though some areas have natural gas lines from Southwest Gas. You'll notice the difference in the summer months June-Sep on your bill, and it can get dry and cold in the winter, but we've done well with space heaters and new windows in our older home. Weatherspark.com has a decent summary of the climate over the year, expect sun, some wind, summer monsoons and dry heat, dry heat, dry heat, then more sun, then cold dry wind. It's snowed a few times in the last 10 years, but nothing that sticks for very long.

Art/Culture: The library is great here (future remodel/expansion hopefully 2019), inside are works from local artists and they host some classes/meet-ups, as with the rec center. There is an art gallery at the Historic Dam Hotel & Museum. There are several many festivals that attract art vendors and tourists which run late Sept-May (July is the only exception with our Damboree Celebration) - Art in the Park is October, and Spring Art Fest in April. The Chamber is very active in town promoting events and tourism. There is a potential expansion of the Southern Nevada Railway Museum to the main corner at Boulder City Parkway and Buchanan. There are many retirees in our town, active Senior Center, Rotary Clubs, and the like. Lots of volunteer potential. Beautiful parks to enjoy and walking/biking distance to the downtown historic area if you don't mind the leg work. Two golf-courses, small, but busy airport, and outdoor recreation events year-around.

The change from the I-11 hasn't been really significant yet, with the exception of fewer larger trucks and RV's. One business (the Alpaca Store) was the first to close.

Doctors/Health we have general, small hospital that is non-profit, many doctors in the Las Vegas area within a 25- 40 minute drive.

We currently have one grocery store, Albertsons, and it's okay, there is also a 99c Only store that is worth checking out before doing your other grocery run. Decent local hardware stores and CVS can fill in some needs, though Henderson is about 15-20 minutes away for other grocery chains, costco, and big box stores. The community is tight-knit, nepotism is known to be part of the local politics (small town for you). No gambling is correct, (Casinos on the end of town in Henderson / Lake Mead NRA), several good restaurants, basic fast-food, variety of churches all Christian-based, antique shops and a few unique shops. Some interesting deals have occured recently, with new developments (BC is a slow-growth ordinance of 2% per year), and industrial/manufacturing licensing of a breastmilk pasturization plant / NICU supplier going in the center of the stoplight next to the 99c store - Medolac? Hasn't opened yet, but will soon.

Boulder City is a classy town, I think. If I could afford it, I would live there for certain. Halloween and Christmas are especially fun. The main street has Vintage style Motels, and sometimes, I feel like I am in a time warp. The lighting, and signs are old fashioned fun in places. The bowling alley neon sign is very retro. It's a clean town, and I have never seen panhandlers, or people pushing grocery carts full of survival gear.
