House is 17 years old and I'm pretty sure we need new windows. Only problem is we expect to move within 2 years so not going to replace those.... I was considering using some foam board on one (or more) of them to block the light and heat

What I did discover was that at least one of my a/c vents has very high temps around it (a/c is switched off)

Most of them registered around 80F when I used a laser thermometer near them. The one in the living room measured over 100F.

When I was renting a tract home with glass windows that faced west, I did the rigid foam board in the window trick. It helped. You don’t need it to be very thick.

I thought of aluminum foil but knew it would look really ghetto.

The foam board is a good idea! I would bet after 17 years you probably have duct tears so your cold air is escaping into the attic. If you can find the tears, it's easy to fix with duct tape. Since you are leaving I wouldn't replace them but tape is cheap!
