STARTING A NEW THREAD.....Looking for updated recommendations on companies to replace my heating and air conditioning unit. Ones you've had personal knowledge/experiences with. I have an 1100 sq foot condo, the heating unit is in the ceiling and the a/c unit outside. I'm seeking quality as well as economical. Don't be afraid to 'steer' me away from ones you've had bad experiences with.

Thank you in advance.

These people were honest and fair. I would use them again. Koldair 7026475908. There is a lot of dishonesty and outright thievery in this industry and I would love to see it exposed!

Thank you ... that’s a good thing for people on here to not only tell the good, but as you say, expose the crooks!

When I had to replace my a/c in my previous location, I ended up using the contractor that works with Costco. Price was competitive, and I know there is a lot of, ahhh, less than upfront types in that business, I felt a bit more comfortable with them being associated with Costco, since Costco has a pretty decent reputation of demanding performance from it's vendors. In my case, I was very happy with the end result. Might be worth at least investigating.

Just go to your local Costco, the vendors are located just near the exit. If you are a Sams Club member they have an A/C guy near the exit too.

I would go with Costco. My mom got a really nice unit from them for $5k for her 1200 sq ft home (installed on the roof). The installed price was middle of the road compared to other quotes. However, she had peace of mind (didn't want to deal with untrustworthy contractors with such an expensive purchase) and got a nice Costco gift card ($500).

Some HVAC companies gave me that used car-salesmen-type of vibe i.e. wanting to upsell , not disclosing all costs, inflating prices and then reducing the quoted price to make it seem like they're 'hooking you up', aggressive sales tactics and not having firm warranty policies.

Additionally, sizing is very important as is efficiency. Since you have a track record on the unit you currently have be sure to write down the specs on it. Did this unit cool good enough or did it work too hard? Be sure to compare the sizing specs of a potential new unit as well as the SEER rating which should be better. Also do some searching regarding reviews the specific brand and model you are looking at. See also if there are any rebates from the power company and/or manufacturer too.

The costco rebate is great, but only if the price is competitive for the actual unit. Definitely get several bids. Ask a lot of questions you will learn a lot and be sure to get information on how loud the unit will be. The sound ie: DB ratings are quite different on different models.

I highly recommend the following forum with HVAC professionals from around the country: AOP Residential HVAC. One contractor did a load calculation for me at no charge utilizing information I gave him along with my building plans.
