I should have said that my back yard faces north. With the pergola and some strategically placed Palo Verde trees on the west side of the yard, I get an ideal mix of sun and shade.

My home faces due south. But the south side is protected by a line of 30 foot Mesquites and a deep over hang over the windows. The rear covered patio faces north and adjoins the pool. Large live oaks provide some coverage but the mountains to the west cut off the evening sun before it gets too bad. Patio temperature practically never exceeds 95.
The layout lets us leave our patio doors open until noon most days. And then open again around dusk.
