Results are in and the difference was negligible; Only running air after 5:00 p.m. used 105.61 kWh that day (Tues), setting to 82 until 5:00 p.m. and then dropping down at 5:00 p.m. we used 101.05 kWh that day (Wed).

Temps were a little higher on Tuesday than Wed but only by a degree or two.

Big difference is comfort, when set at 82 all day it doesn't take long to get down to our after 5:00 p.m. temp, vs. turning off all day the temp would rise to 88/89 depending on how hot it was and when the air came on at 5:00 p.m. it took a couple of hours to reach comfort temp, and it pretty much ran constantly from 5:00 p.m. until we went to bed.

Might play with 83/84 vs. 82 too.

My swamp cooler can run all day and house never goes above 85 with this extreme heat. I have no radiant barrier nor any attic fans

After 7, if it's still blazing hot, like it has been this past week, we can run the conventional ac and sleep downstairs

Kind of sucks as conventional ac works harder to remove the added humidity

If I ever use above 40kwh in one day, then that's a lot compared to typical usage. I have a 2 speed pool pump and have been running it on low pretty much the entire year 10hrs/day. Saved me a lot I'm guessing even though I only run it during off peak tou rates

I live in Portland not Vegas (but one day), but I put in absolute top of the line HVAC in my 3 story home. We don't tolerate any temperature variations, I literally can't think of anything more important in a house than being exactly the temperature it should be. Except maybe maybe noise control but that's mostly a close 2nd. Our systems cost $28,000 but they work, one is a ductless unit in the daylight basement and it's fairly slow to work but the advice I was given is never turn it off. It has a SEER rating above 30, most energy efficient unit on the market. It's best to just let it do its thing even when you're not in the basement. I turn it down maybe 30 minutes before I work out (home gym down there).

The other system is a Trane and if you're in Vegas you really should have a variable system. None of this one stage / two stage thing. That's 90s tech. My variable system can handle anywhere from 25-100% effort in 1% increments so it's never using more energy than is necessary to do its job. I cool to 65 at night regardless of outdoor temperature and when I say night I mean 4 am to about noon which is when I sleep. System starts cooling by 1:30 from 72 degrees where it stays during the day.

I guess if you don't have the right insulation or system you have to compromise Lifestyle but no thanks to that. I pay $100-200/month electricity and I work from home, largely because we also have solar panels so summer is the cheapest season for us. Very little sun in the winter combined with high heating demands, unfortunately.

I just wouldn't buy in Vegas unless the house could cover its own electrical from solar alone. It should be easy with a large house because you guys don't build up you seem to build out (no basements, rarely even do $1-2M houses seem to have over 2 floors, etc.). For me I can't sleep if it's hotter than about 68 but every sleep institute agrees that 65 is ideal temperature for sleeping and given sleeping is literally one of the most important things you can do for your health, why cheap out on HVAC?! It's way more important than eating out or all kinds of other BS people pay for

If you're asking the OP (me) no, rarely gamble, will go months without gambling. If I do I play craps and usually break even. I have a craps table and video poker/slot/black jack/keno machine in my game room so I get my fix in at home.

What does it matter?

$10 a month = $120 a year = $12,000 every 100 years

I asked the same thing basically...haven't you heard of inverters? 28K?...way OTOP...I have a 1.5 ton inverter, 16 seer for my condo that was 795 usd, installed. Is it the smelly homeless people or the twice a month garbage pickup that keeps you in recluse in Portlandia?
