Hopefully someone has a lead...I am looking for fresh fish. Not frozen, not flash frozen, not mushy, and not farm raised..a nice white fish for ceviche.

I won't go on about why I cannot find simple food things here that I can in almost any other part of the country (like baked lays tortilla scoops..all other baked lays products are here but not tortilla scoops..?&!#).

Sorry, not shellfish, just a good fish source.

I searched here but last question asked was two years ago, and not new info to me.

The two whole foods on the westside carry subpar product. Last time i purchased from WF i ended up with mushy flesh whole trouts that I just threw away before I even cooked. Such a disappointment, their cases are not kept to a high enough standard which is evident by the way they display fish....oh and way overpriced for the quality. I'm not looking for salmon, tuna or talapia either.

Costco fish comes in frozen or portioned flash frozen, same for sprouts and restaurant depot.

Anyone else amused by albertsons and smiths when the display frozen filets in a fan arrangement, sticking straight up right out of the ice?? smh..

You would think with all the high end restaurants, some of the decent products would filter down. May try calling one of the restaurant purveyors but that would be cases, not a pound or two.

Besides paying for overnight shipping from either coast, or writting the question to the paper for their column, any ideas?
thanks in advance.

The Asian food stores here have loads of live fish swimming in tanks. It sort of freaks me out with the amount they carry and amuses me at the same time.

There's a lot of them but I've seen the tanks at SF Supermarket on Spring Mtn and International Market on Decatur in the SW.

Thanks Merry. Never been to either of those, though frequent 168 often - usually for large swine cuts. Will check out.

Attached to a former fishmonger from brooklyn...the bar in my house is pretty high on quality and product.

We have purchased whole snappers from one of the Asian grocery stores, to be broken down and fileted at home, clear eyes, no smell and all, just to find it sat too long not properly handled...and wasn't fresh enough to cook.

I find "turf" in all forms pretty easily and isn't that pricy. Also shellfish seems abundant but, we have a shellfish allergy to contend with to boot.

Here's the best I have found. Lots of live fish in tanks. 168 ???? 168 Market

There is also a great Eastern European market in this same strip mall. Amazing fresh roasted coffee for $5 per lb.

I was thinking Seafood City was probably just the ticket.

There are a few other live fish places with walls of tanks but I can't recall all the names off the top of my head. I usually go in there for a box of tea I like or some sauce I need for an asian recipe I'm trying out. Seriously the amount of fish these places carry astonishes me and to keep them live like that. So many questions about the process and the demand go through my mind in those stores.

I really love looking at all the kitchen goods there too and checking out the items in their deli selections and pondering what some of the items taste like. I once tried some hot seafood cakes from a deli and thought it might be good but spit them out and tossed them. Now I ask the grocery store employees for advice on items. They're really helpful with recommendations and explanations.

I'm going to really miss all the Asian food stores here.
