On my trip to Vegas earlier this week, I brought along a bunch of $50 Amex gift cards. I was planning on giving them to the dealers working at my favorite casino (somewhere in the Aliante area - wink wink) on the graveyard shift. I usually go up that way at 6AM on my trips and play Pai Gow Poker till 11AM when the day crew comes in.

One of the dealers told me previously that it was against the rules but they probably wouldn't give me any crap about it if I wanted to hand out gift cards. So I bought them & took them with me. I asked the pit boss if that would be a problem and he said he'd double-check with his boss. His boss' answer was that it'd be OK if I gave one to all of the 80-100 dealers that worked there. Yeah, that's not gonna happen..I was told that if I brought in something like baked goods that wouldn't be a problem...so when I come to Vegas next time I think I'll stop at the best bakery I can find & bring in a ton of baked goods that they can put in the break room or whatever..

Anyone have any suggestions on who sells the best cookies, cakes, pies, etc. in the North Las Vegas area of town?

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING! NO ONE WANTS COOKIES. JUST GIVE THEM A MONETARY TIP AND IT WILL BE MORE APPRECIATED. WHY DO YOU THINK THEY'D WANT BAKED GOODS? jEEZ.

That's what these management types told me....I couldn't give cash...but people had brought in baked goods before and the casino was OK with that...

If I can't give a $50 gift card to those I want to, what good would giving a $500 tip do any of them? It'd be divided up 100 ways and they'd get a whopping $5 each. Big deal. While I was there Tuesday & Wednesday I donated over $100 in tips ($75 of it was from betting $1 for the dealer on hands that I got a Straight Flush & a 4-o-a-k; so those paid $50 and $25 to the dealers).

The thing is, I wanted to give $50 each to the dealers on the graveyard shift & they wouldn't let me. I wanted them to actually get $50 and not 50 cents each because it went in the shared dealer tips...So it blows that I can't be nice to the dealers on that shift..I shouldn't have to be nice to all the other shift dealers that I don't even know.

So how about some advise on how to get around the casino management and give a nice tip just to those 10 people or so that I want to give $50 each to?

You sound like a generous, thoughtful player. Just continue to tip and show your appreciation. The dealers respect your generosity and don't expect a gift beyond that. Being polite, respecting the rules of the game, and generosity are rare, but highly sought attributes in a player--the dealers, for the most part, enjoy a break from the drunk, angry, incompetent fool blaming them for every bad hand. Don't make them uncomfortable or jeopardize their job by pressing this with management. Frankly, it is odd and a little eccentric.

I respect your intentions, but you are trying too hard. Management already has a system in place for players to reward dealers. By pursuing this, you are becoming a nuisance to management. Let go.

I've never had anyone call me eccentric before...I was just trying to be nice to the dealers. But I'll just place more tips for the dealers at the Pai Gow tables instead. I did hit on some high paying hands for the dealers this past trip so I'll continue to do that.

Last Christmas I decided I'd give gift cards to the 3 ladies that work the counter at my local Post Office. Only one was there when I came by so I gave her all 3 envelopes and asked her to pass the other 2 along to her co-workers. I don't think they ever receive tips there. The next time I came in, they all ran out to hug me. Around Valentine's Day I passed out gift cards to the manager & the other employees at my credit union. The manager wrote a very nice thank-you card & all of the others signed it. I felt so good about those two that I decided I'd do that for the dealers at the casino this year. I really was just trying to be nice. I didn't expect anything in return from anyone. They handle money at the bank too, so I didn't think it would be a problem with management at the casino. Too bad it was a problem.

Thank you for recognizing the importance of saying "thank you". It makes all of the difference in the world to the vast majority of people. You'd be surprised how many bosses never learn that simple little thing!

That said, don't fret their policy. I'd bet it exists for multiple very good reasons, chief of which would be it removes any temptation to "help" someone who gave them a gift by overlooking some part of the game, or miscalculating a hand, etc. Many professions do not allow employees to take gifts/tips. If you gave the postal employees too large of a gift card, they should have returned it, as there are very strict gifting rules for federal employees. (again for good reason)

It's definitely the thought that counts, and my bet (no pun intended) if you give the dealers a heartfelt "thank you", it will be as uplifitng as the gift card itself. They are well aware of the rules of gifting at their job..

There is a first time for everything.

No one disagrees with your noble intentions, but actively seeking ways to be generous is one positive, admirable character trait--pursuing ways to do it that put everyone but you at odds with the method is eccentricity.

BTW, buying baked goods for everyone is not going to meet your intentions to reward 10 dealers, who are already thankful for your generous tips and table etiquette. Accepting this as enough is well...enough.

Oh well, thanks anyway. I'll just tip more the next time I'm in Vegas. But it's not the same thing since they won't individually get diddly out of it with shared tips.
