i've searched thru the past threads, but haven't found what i need. i'm thinking my plan would require a general contractor, above & beyond what a typical handyman can do.

the project:
i detest my sliding glass door. it fights with me every time i use it. i'm thinking of getting a larger door in it's place. i also have a crack in the drywall above the slider, another contractor told me it's because the header was installed crown down, so i'd like this to be fixed as well (if necessary).

i am looking for someone knowledgeable with installing sliding glass doors, headers, stucco & drywall.

any recommendations?

Don't most people change sliding glass to French doors? We did in our last house and were a lot happier.

count me in the the minority, i dislike french doors. i don't like the look, i don't like the functionality. i have no plans of selling the house, so i'm not looking for resale value. if my bank account was a bottomless pit, i'd install these:

Bifold Doors & Folding Glass Wall Systems from NanaWall

I did that, too. I hate sliders.

My sister in law is a carpenter and did the work. But she's not licensed as a contractor.

This guy does amazing work at great prices. Many Realtors I know use him to get their homes in shape before listing them. He does everything including plumbing and electrical. I just used him to update my Mom's home and he did a great job.

Oh really? Did he take out the drywall to inspect it? This sets off my bs alarm. All headers sag a bit. If you are going to replace the door anyway, you might be able to replace the header with a larger one, or one made of steel, or maybe just sheath the old one with plywood.

^^^ that's why i'm not 1000% sure we would NEED to replace the header, but if it needs to be now would be the time to do it.

thanks for the responses!

Do you mind telling me how much it cost to change out the slide for French doors? I'm planning to do this at some point and have no idea what's actually involved. I can't stand my slider or the awful vertical blinds that cover it.

We hate patio doors so we did this:

See the window just left of the door? It was a patio door (slider). We replaced it with the window and added a walk-out door next to it.

Edit: We used Designer Kitchen and Baths for our remodel (see it here) and are very pleased. Best quote and excellent work. Barbara Turns 702-326-3202

Edit edit: Sheesh! I forgot. They did not do the work you see in this picture. I wish they had, it would have turned out better.
