We have to keep our garbage can in the garage but it has lid on it that seals pretty tight. Because some asked, yes we have a problem here because of the heat which is why they pick up our garbage twice a week. I understand most cities only pick up once a week.

This sounds like a job for a neighborhood 14 year old. Pay a kid to wash the inside of your trash cans. You provide cleaning supplies & a couple brushes. Maybe finish it off with bleach.

Pour in some garage floor cleaner, hose in a few gallons of water and then hit it with a broom a few times. Repeat as necessary.

I used to use a Behrens galvanized steel trash can to store used kitty litter in until trash day. At first, I was putting the used litter (I'd scoop 2x a day into plastic grocery bags) in the big plastic city-provided container stored in the garage. It would reek out the whole garage.....and in Houston's heat + matching humidity my garage did not smell like roses, that's for sure.

I'd put the "regular" garbage in the plastic bin, and the used kitty litter in the Behrens can. Closed, there was no smell. Of course when it was opened to make a "deposit" i'd get a whiff of what was going on in there haha. Before putting the big plastic can on the curb, i'd just lift out the contents of the lined Behrens can and put it in the big plastic can.

he need to wash it every time between garbage pick up to avoid bad odors, or just leave the garage door or windows open during daytime or use an exhaust fan.

You can't leave your garage door open here. The HOA would be on you like flies on poop. Windows? Who has garage windows?

I bag my kitty litter throughout the week and place in my laundry rm. Before I did this I thought I was going to be sick from the smell. If there is any food, I leave it in a bag in the refrigerator. Yes, the smell in a closed in garage is horrible but I have no place to store it outside.
