So having lived in Las Vegas once before, this time instead of Centennial Hills, I'm living in North Las Vegas near Decatur and Alexander

So far it's been pretty decent, my immediate neighborhood is pretty nice, the demographics are pretty diverse and my street is pretty quiet and I haven't seen NLV PD out here yet

The constant on and off construction on Decatur between Craig and Ann has gotten both annoying and old fairly quickly. The Albertson's on Craig and Decatur is awful too, mostly for its high prices, poor layout and selection, as well as never having more than 2 registers open with 7-10 customers in each line with full carts. Luckily my Smith's is just a short way further up Decatur at Ann

All my old shopping and restaurants I used to go to on Centennial Center are relatively convenient too, Santa Fe, Aliante, Texas, and Fiesta casinos are all 5-10 minutes away too which is nice

I'm also glad to see the 215 between Jones and N 5th Street is an actual freeway now, driving that is much more pleasant than it was in 2010-2012

I've learned to avoid the Craig Rd Wal-Mart super center like the plague....that place is just awful....ill pay the extra to go to Target on N5th or Decatur/215 any day to avoid dealing with all that drama

My only real complaint is I'm not really convenient to any of the freeways...getting to the 95 from Cheyenne is a PITA thanks to the red lights, driving east all the way to the 15 is worse

Overall I like it though....not my first choice for a place to live...but not bad.

What kind of drama are you talking about at Walmart?

I use to live in that area. Border of 89108 and 89130 (LV/NLV). It has changed a lot in the last 15 years and I use to take Gowan east and west to avoid traffic on Cheyenne. Other than the quirks you mentioned, its not a bad area and is not to far from most things.

It's wise to avoid all Wal-marts.

Yes, Gowan is your friend!

Love Torrey Pines North and South as a way to cut across the Westside with very little traffic (just make sure its NOT a time when schools are letting out).

I really try to avoid Cheyanne and Rainbow, I've noticed a concentration of really remarkably stupid drivers in that area and that is even going by the Vegas driving standards.

Glad your relocation is working out ok.

There's nothing wrong with living in that part of the valley except maybe as you mentioned easier freeway access but in the larger picture that too is not bad. If I have to go to a Walmart I go to the one on N. Decatur and the 215 but I prefer the Winco.

Sure there are rougher areas of NLV but so of LV itself. The same holds true for nicer areas. I also like the lack of major traffic in the Decatur area of NLV. It might seem bad to some but IMO traffic is not bad at all in this part of the valley.

I have many rental houses in NLV. We have terrific tenants, most in for multi years and they seem to enjoy the location and the lot sizes. Just one burglary in 10 years and that was during a vacancy.

The best house/rental investment in the entire valley is 89081 zip.

The houses in a gated area, are worth about 10-15% more.

I have never had an unpleasant experience at the Decatur/215 Walmart, or the one on Centennial Center for that matter...however Walmart is still not my first shopping choice and never will be. I do like the Kmart on Rancho/Craig...they have some good stuff for good prices...and since they're usually never busy I always get in and out in less than 10 minutes, even target cannot pull that off

Decatur certainly sees a high volume of traffic but it's not congested by any means, though I don't really take that road south of Cheyenne...just between my place and 215 usually...

I think North Las Vegas gets a bad rap (and unfairly) for being the "rough" part of town, especially since Las Vegas itself has some bad (and often much worse) neighborhoods...granted NLV has some AWFUL areas (just about any cross street on LV Blvd North, or along Lake Mead, or east of the 15) but overall NLV isn't a bad place to live...Centennial Hills or Summerlin would still be my first choices but for the time being I'm content where I'm at

Yes, agree. There's still a negative perception/stereotype of NLV and its mostly from those that rarely or never made it up. Generally, the further north of Cheyenne you get the better it gets. Future growth is destined to be around the northern beltway as the SW is currently being filled in. UNLV is expected to build a satellite campus by the new Veteran's hospital.
