We are planning a move from San Diego to Las Vegas in November, when I retire from the City of San Diego. My health is decent at 69, wife is dealing with some aged medical issues, and my mother-in-law who is around 88, will need care as she'll come live with us.

We have Kaiser in California, and would have preferred them with HMO Senior Advantage. But, they are not in Nevada. What would you all recommend as best choices for us in Las Vegas?

Thanks,
Michael aka DrWeb

Thanks for the help! We have Kaiser now, but would want a plan that works with/for Medicare once I retire. Not looking at medicare gap or supplemental, just regular health care HMO on top of Medicare.

The two big Medicare Advantage players in the valley are Humana and United Health Care. Each work through a number of different medical groups. My wife and I currently have Humana through HealthCare Partners and have been satisfied.

I know someone with UHC. He is more than a little hypochondriac, is in really good condition and still goes to the doctor every 2 weeks. He loves them and he expects a LOT from his medical providers. He had Southwest Medical before UHC and he has nothing but bad things to say about them.

You are going to miss Kaiser. We sure do. Here in Nevada we use Cigna.

We move here to retire 4 years ago and I had been with kaiser since I was 8 years old! We are on Medicare and with Caremore (HMO) and are quite satisfied. DM me if you would like the name of the senior insurance advisor that we used. She handles all the insurance companies and can help you choose what works for you

UHC owns Southwest Medical.

I was with Caremore with another insurance plan and I HATED the experience with the inept doctors. I guess your mileage will vary depending on which doctors you see. I got tired of them expecting me to do 5 million tests and procedures, while never getting to the problem. The only thing good about them that I liked was their nice waiting room and they would see you fairly quickly, not make you wait all day like in other places.
