Giordano's is popular for the same reason that Papa John's is so popular -- it's big, cheap and filling. And if you don't really care that much about taste or authenticity, that's enough.

For what it's worth, I would be just as vehement if people claimed Taco Bell is authentic Mexican food.

Hahahaha Papa Johns

I love this place below for deep dish pizza. They are right by my house and are excellent. I pay around $18 with tax for a 10 inch pepperoni deep dish pizza. Expensive but worth it.

Aren't there different styles of pizza, similar to how there are different styles of tacos? Carnitas, carne asada, etc. Are they any less of a taco because they aren't, perhaps, made the way the original was made? How about steak? If the first dude who ever lopped off a chunk of cow and throw it on a fire happened to lop off a ribeye, would a sirloin be any less of a steak?

New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey have pizza. All other states have baked dough and sauce.

There are really only two styles of pizza -- Neapolitan, and Roman. Everything else is a cheap knock-off, as dissimilar from the real thing as "Big Corporation grated Parmesan Cheeze (TM)" is from real Parmigiano-Reggiano. (Or the crap balsamic vinegar they sell at the megamart is from real made-in-Modena balsamic.)

The fakes aren't even close to the real McCoy. As I have said countless times, it is like the difference between "table syrup" and real maple syrup. Most Americans instantly know what I'm talking about when it comes to maple syrup. It's a shame they can't apply that to the rest of the world's delicacies.

I should be thankful that most people are blissfully ignorant -- the real thing costs too much as it is. But it is a constant source of disappointment that most people don't care to expand their horizons.

EDIT -- Since "most people" also aren't interested in reading my links, here's the takeaway about American "pizza":

"New York Style offends me more because its closer to pizza by definition, but just gets it so wrong that it's an insult to Italy. They fact that they sometimes refer to their style as "regular" Neapolitan style is just a joke. It's a ginormous wet blanket of dough dipped in grease, topped in something resembling watery tomato juice, cheese, and has to be folded in half because the crust sags like a limp d---. If Chicago's is a casserole, then at least it's completed dish. New York's is, for all intents and purposes, a poorly made calzone that the customers have to fold themselves."
