Since we have not bought a house yet and I am retiring I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for cheaper housing if we moved outside the valley.

Just a random thought but it doesn't seem like the savings would be very big.

Get a lot more house per dollar in Pahrump. I know of no other place else that really makes any sense...if you want reasonable access to Las Vegas. Overton Mesquite is either expensive or pretty strong LDS and rural.

The river communities are hot and pretty red neck. As the greatest of all CD posters says you can move to 1955 if you wish. Note they are warm...even compared to Phoenix.

Go take a look at Pahrump. If I was trying to stretch a dollar I would go to either Pahrump or central LV...say between Charleston and Sahara at Arville.

Kingman, Arizona is another possibility and only 90 miles from Vegas.

That's what LVOC was referring to when he mentioned moving to 1955. Dynimaglv used to say he lived in 1955 after he moved to Kingman. I wish he still posted here.

as lvoc said, you get more bang for your buck in pahrump - housing is less, lot sizes are bigger (altho, if you want the postage stamp size lot, they do exist here just not as plentiful), taxes are less, sometimes gas is cheaper, less crowds & the temps are cooler.

on the flip side...the dr's out here are marginal so i suggest vegas for those. depending on your type of entertainment requirements (movie theater, touristy stuff, etc) you'll have to trek into vegas for it. for REAL shopping, we gotta go to vegas.

DM me if you want more info about pahrump. i'll be happy to help!

Is it the Route 66 thing?

We've stopped in Kingman a number of times. Hot, dry, dusty. Yet I've talked to people who love it there, so there must be something to it.

A lot of hassle driving into town if majority of things you like to do are in Vegas but if you still like to check out an area not far away, then Dolan Springs in AZ. Small town, near the river but definitely not much going on, cheaper than Pahrump, NV and closer to Vegas than Kingman AZ.

There is no "outside the valley" in other words. It's here, or somewhere else. Pahrump is the closest, and it's 65 miles away, and there isn't much of a town there, and no medical facilities.

You might take a look at Saint George, Utah. It's a really nice little town only about 1½ to 2 hours away. Lots of people go there to retire from around here so they have good restaurants, golf, fishing, medical facilities, close to Zion NP, etc., etc. But the problem is for you, I don't know if you can find cheaper housing there.
