With regards to full day kindergarten I would assume there are some type of benefits that could be had if it were offered to all kids.... in terms of getting them started with math, reading and what not.

My wife's school offers full-day kindergarten at no charge. But it's a Title I school, which receives federal funds. So, EA, just find out if the school in your area is Title I and then you'll know if full-day kindergarten is free or not.

It is not a title 1 school.

The OP explicitly stated that half day kindergarten was free. What they charged for was fill day, which has never been traditionally provided by public schools.

EVERY school I have attended had full day kindergarten. Every school my wife attended had full day kindergarten.
The school my daughter attended had full day kindergarten. Pretty sure full day kindergarten IS traditionally offered.

From a lvrj article:

"It’s scary to me when, in Nevada, we’re fighting for full-day kindergarten when we have the lowest participation in early childhood education,” said Sandy Miller, former Nevada first lady and education advocate. “Look how hard we have to fight to get what other states consider to be the most basic standard. But yay on us; we are No. 1 in access to alcohol.”

In 2013, the Legislature considered expanding full-day kindergarten. However, the bill didn’t pass due to budget constraints, among other concerns.
“It’s very interesting in Nevada because kindergarten students are not funded at the same level as all of the other students,” said Victoria Carreon, director of Research and Policy at the Guinn Center, a nonprofit that analyzes policy issues facing Nevada. “They only get 60 percent of the funding compared to all of the other students. That has not made full-day kindergarten very feasible for the school district level in the past.”
The Nevada Department of Education estimated that full-day kindergarten would cost approximately $40,464,672 for 2014-15."

Apparently this is very much an in-flux thing nationwide:

It is tough, but we all do the best we can, and being a single dad -- well, my hat is off to you.

My daughter was born about 23 years ago. It was a Wednesday, and a few hours after my wife delivered, I drove home from the hospital, picked up the mail, and tossed it on our kitchen table.

That day, we received a copy of Consumer Reports magazine. It flipped open to a spot in the magazine where it had a subscription card -- and the article on the page that showed was titled "Saving for College" with a chart at the bottom of the page that said "If your child is born today, here is how much you'll have to save each month" for various scenarios: public education, private education, public 2 year community college, public 4 year university, private 4 year university, 2 year grad school, 3 year law school, 4 years of med school....

It really took our breath away. But at least we knew.

Again, and again, this is a low tax, low service state. Other peoples' kids are not what anyone here wants to pay for. And parents have to plan. Yes, plan. Sorry, but kids just aren't just for Christmas. Personally , I believe in supporting schools, health care, and day care so kids whose parents don't plan won't be on the short end. I spent my career caring for kids that parents did not give a second thought to after conception. Don't dream beyond your means if you have kids. If you are living in a state that values kids and services for them, don't wander here thinking Mr. Wynn or Mr. Adelson will pony up so you don't have to pay for day care or all day kindergarten. Being a perfect 10 in the mind of a casino boss will not matter. Kids, as wonderful as you think they make your life, cost money, do not come with guarantees, warranties, return policies, or give a crap about your nursing home. And having kids or more kids does not change anything, regardless of your religious or political beliefs. If you believe the sex industry in this state means that the consequences of such are valued, you are mistaken. Think this through, ok? I don't mean to sound harsh, but the reality for the kids put in this position is harsh, too.

In 2013 Safekey almost went away. A spokesperson for CCSD said it was costing the district too much money and they didn't want to be a "baby sitting service". Just imagine if fees would have increased or the program went away.

Luckily valley parents spoke up at the town hall meetings.
