You will be able to save a lot of money if you break up your rental into one week to ten day segments. This is a pain because you must return to the rental facility once a week or so to pick up your new rental. This will save you about a thousand a month over a long term rental. For the first week go through Thrifty or Payless. Then you can do a last minute Hotwire or Priceline rental that should score you a car for around $125 a week or so. You would like some more certainty no doubt, but no worries as Las Vegas will not run out of rental cars. Besides, you might be able to buy something after just a couple weeks. You never know. Stay flexible. Good luck.

This is just the information I'm after. I reckon if I can get something for around $150 a week I'll be happy.

As for looking for a car I'm just going to buy a cheap truck first - my wife will get to have the "nice" car.

My main requirement is cold AC!

When we were down for a 5-week visit to our condo and renting a car we found no one would give us a good deal for the whole long-term rental. What we did, a few months in advance to get the best specials, was watch for deals and then we broke it down into 3 separate rentals. Stupid to have to drive to Mccarran Rental Centre 3 times, turn it in, and then go to another company's counter, rent another car, etc. but it saved us almost 50% of the cost of renting for a 5 week period. I used carrentals.com and a few other search engines to find the cheapest for each 10-12 day period.

There is a thing on Priceline where you can make a bid for a car. Whilst we are still a few months from making a move, I have done a few test runs (giving a months notice), and it seems we can get a car for around $15 a day for a months rental.

This almost seems too good to be true

I've noticed that car rentals in Las Vegas are much higher than Podunk. I suppose it's because we're a resort town. But I don't know if they will rent you a car for that long anyway. It would be cheaper to just go to CarMax and buy a cheap used car, then if you want a new one later just sell it or trade it in.

Oh, and if you do the rental turn-in using a couple companies in your timeframe, make sure they are all at McCarran Rent A Car Centre. I know Fox comes up in the search engine with real cheap prices but it is not at the Centre and you have to take another shuttle to get to it as it is a bit of a way from the Rent A Centre.
