My girlfriend and I are city shopping. We need to move somewhere closer than we are now (Colorado Springs) to a major airport. Vegas, being 4 hours from LAX, would work fine. So let me ask a quick question....

I had no idea Vegas would be awesome. I've never gambled in my life, and would never, and so I always dismissed it for that reason. But then, in the process of looking for where we'll live next, about three days ago I stumbled across the fact that Vegas is two hours or less from Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Charleston Peak, the Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Mojave Recreation Area, Zion Canyon and Bryce Canyon. Once I realized that... I decided to at least look into it.

I've got like 7 years experience in shipping and receiving and just warehousing in general... inventory and such. My girlfriend is just been working in customer service and has a bunch of waitressing experience too. Eventually, we want to purchase a house and start a business. We've got money saved up that could last us a long time without jobs, and we have no kids. We basically just picked up and moved and came to Colorado Springs, but finding a job was damn near impossible out here if you're not willing to work for the military or one of their contractors, which I'm not. After like 6 months I found a GREAT warehouse gig, so that was cool. But are my odds better in Vegas of picking something up earlier than that? I hear that cost of living is really low too, are wages? Could I expect like 13-14 an hour for a warehouse shipping clerk or something? And am I right about it being amazing for the outdoors?

Also, Colorado Springs is ridiculously conservative. I'm not a liberal by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm very live-and-let-live. I swear and drink and smoke and say what's on my mind. I'm not vile or reckless, but I like to enjoy myself. Here in the Springs, though, that's totally frowned upon by just about everyone I've run across. Will I fit in a little better in Vegas?

And last... are there any areas in Vegas that have a little more color than others? meaning more brown folks lol

let me know!

adam

You are right about it being amazing outdoors.

You need to factor in Los Angeles traffic...I don't think making it to LAX in 4 hours is likely to happen.

Shipping 10 bucks an hour...customer service minimum wage... you will need substantial savings. It's takes awhile to get a job here. Credit, drug, and background checks need to be clean

I don't get it. You are less than 90 minutes from Denver's airport. What makes being 4 hours from LAX a better situation?

Go to www.yelp.com and do search on las Vegas staffing agencies and just give them a call. Also the city bus company is usually hiring. Just keep checking back for driver positions. They do train you for the CDL. https://keolistransit.jobs/locations

Once you do get here drop by some of the local casinos and just ask some of the locals if they know who's hiring?

it's like four hundred dollars cheaper per person to fly out of LAX than DIA where we need to go.

Where do you need to go?

For a handful of flights, McCarran is a ripping good deal.

If proximity to LAX is the issue, why not move to CA. I assume you're flying to somewhere in Asia How often you do need to do this?

This is Vegas...we have great flights everywhere. We probably have more flights in and out than any other city our size. After all, our business is tourism. People in, people out. We have everything. Want a concert? All the big names are here. Hungry for Ethiopian food? We've got it.

You will probably love the ethnic diversity here. And no one cares about color, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc. There is one major form of discrimination. Money. You can do what you want and live anywhere you can afford. There are haves and have nots.

You forgot to mention Lake Powell. It's pretty cool too. And lots of other places as well. Add in no bugs and no shoveling. 300 or so sunny days a year. We do get some wind and occasional flash flooding but that's about it. There was a forest fire last year that filled the valley with smoke a couple times.

Next the things that aren't so good. We have about 12 weeks of weather that's REALLY hot. The rest of the year is pretty perfect in my opinion. Anyone considering Vegas needs to come here in the summer and check it out. Jobs. In Vegas, we serve and people who serve are poorly paid. Think working multiple part time jobs with no benefits. Hard work, low salaries, on your feet all the time. Amazon has a warehouse here and they pay $12 per hour. There was a protest recently about onerous security procedures that kept employees waiting to clear security long after they had clocked out. I have heard it's so hot that paramedics are there full time to treat heat exhaustion. But I don't know that for a fact/have not seen it myself. And there is a lot of competition for those crappy jobs. Just an example for you, I have a friend who has a management position in a local casino player's club. She has a degree from Penn State and has been working there for 20 years. Salary? $12 per hour. If you want a casino job or something that handles other people's money, you have to have a clean record and be able to pass a drug test. And not the easy one either, usually hair. And they will check your credit too. Las Vegas is urban and there is crime here. We do attract some unsavory elements of society.

If you want to open a business here, you are golden. People expect low pay, part time, and no benefits. And there's no state income tax but you will pay a lot to do things like register your car. Vegas is very pro-business.

Housing and food are reasonable. Electricity is high and believe me you WILL use it.

Spend some time here before you move!

I would give up a few extra bucks to avoid LAX... And if you are planning on leaving your car in the lot while you are gone then the cost would be no different from flying out of DIA or McCarran.... And either of those are waaay easier to get in and out of than LAX...
