Personally I wouldn't worry about it even if it were Lone Mountain instead of Yucca Mountain.

I would.

See Chernobyl. And what is a minor incident at Lone Mountain could easily contaminate for 10 or 15 miles around.

And the mere threat destroys property values.

Fukushima? How could a well planned and run nuclear power plant operation kill everything for 20 miles.
I think we would be much better off with nuclear storage at Yucca or better yet...someplace in the middle of Illinois.

Now for 5 billion a year? Maybe worth the risk...

Lone mountain I could understand all the opposition...Yucca? I don't understand it.

Anyone thinking they'll be stuck on the 215 waiting for a nuclear tanker to pass by might already be contaminated and should get looked at.

Our state is on the verge of being California 2.0
Adopting their people, politics and way of life.

Just look at this Bunkerville ranch deal going on?

LOL Federal government enforcing something that has only to do with the state?

Yet federal government doesn't even do the things they are required to do by law??? Like actually enforce illegal immigration?

...then federal government wants to sue states like Arizona who pass laws that are the exact same as the federal governments...but allows the state to enforce it THEMSELVES.

Thats another discussion though.

Long story short. Federal government is a joke. Why can't we be a smart state for once? Well...look at California...because that's what we'll be...just no nice beaches to temporarily erase the burden of debt in our minds.

The Yucca Mountain Project is never really dead. Politicians that hate Nevada are always using it as a threat. Our delegation was absolutely wrong in opposing it in the first place. They should have told the government they'd cooperate for the right amount of money for schools and infrastructure, or other project that would provide jobs.

At one time, before Billery was Prez, we had about 10,000 job positions between the Test Site and Nellis.

Ever been to the site? It's is hundreds of square miles of desert pockmarked by nuclear test holes everywhere. They set off something like 1300 nukes, or more, up there. It's already ruined for an eternity, so why not store nuke waste there? Can't be any worse.

Just beyond Nellis is what used to be called Lake Mead Base. It was a Naval facility. Now it is nuclear weapons storage. It isn't five miles from homes in North Las Vegas. These arguments are silly, and the issue is just a political football designed to get votes for Democrats like Reid. "Look what I did to protect you." From what. It's already here.

I agree. When the feds decided it (the waste) was coming here, a true statesman would have said, "Fine, but you will pay us." We would have had a well-funded highway system and a great educational system if the cards had been played right. Hell, can you imagine the science department if this had been handled properly? UNLV could have become a big draw for budding researchers and engineers.

Unfortunately, the elected officials were trying to keep their jobs, and who wants to be the guy that voted "YES" on the 'Screw Nevada' bill come election day?

Democracy is good, except when it isn't.

We will end up with the nuclear waste, and the public will not get paid for it.

Stuff is shipped all the time and it is NOT all clearly marked either.. They ship a wide veriety of things in all sorts of labeled vehicles.. Ever see a milk truck driving down the road and it has plates from another state.. Not just the state right next to you but a state several states away?? They aint hauling milk.. Also look at some of the shipping vehicles some time.. Some of them have Govt plates on them.. even though they might say Martha's Bakery.... Or something like that... Also Yucca is not just storage for waste.. It holds "other" secrets as well... Things no one wants us to know about.....

There are also a couple of other "places" in Nevada that have storage facilities to hold all sorts of things.... So while everyone discusses or argues about this, it is and has been happening for awhile... And will continue to do so....

my 'clearly marked' comment was referring to the haz waste dot placards on the trucks, not the advertising signage on the vehicle itself. there are books that explain all of these symbols & some people find the game of "what's in that truck?" a way to pass the time while on a long boring road trip

Think again if you are sure EVERY vehicle has a DoT placard or insignia... Our Govt does what they want when they want and how they want...

Take it from someone who has done work of all kinds for the Feds for over 32 years, Their are vehicles moving all around that you would NEVER believe are hauling certain stuff....

Regular passenger vehicles with Govt plates on them will NEVER carry DoT insignia...and yet they move stuff all over every day of the year.... And not just people or normal things...
