Hi all.
Not wanting to hire an accountant, I was planning on
Having my federal taxes done by AARP (income qualify
Seniors). They don't do state taxes. Since I was a resident
Of CA Jan-sept. I would file as a non-resident in Ca.
Just went to franchise tax board web site as was told I could
E file there for free. One qualification says residence required
For full year.
They aren't staffing phones & no live chat available.

Has anyone used calfile to file in CA as a partial resident?
Thanks

I just did my taxes using H&R Block on my computer. I moved to Vegas in July. I put on tax info that I only lived in California for 6 months. I will owe about $200.00. Hope this helps you!

Thanks. I have never done them online. I guess the free ones are only for those who would do the "e-z" form.
It's just me - not wanting to pay taxes & then hire someone to figure out how to present the info to the irs.
But if there is a free service, I like to take advantage.
The fed & state have to be done @ the same time. That's what I'm finding. Seems like you should be able to do them however you wish & just put 1040 #s in as applicable. But this is the gov!

Hope your bottom line wasn't too much of a surprise, after a move it can be a little tight.

I second H&R Block. I am an accountant and have been using their software for my own taxes for years

I have been using TurboTax for many years. Do you know if there is a significant difference between H&R Block and TurboTax?

I have not compared them side by side, but I'm sure they are very similar.

I am going to try a free site, myfreetaxes.com. Sponsored by VITA
You have to have a low to moderate income but they told me they did cover
Up to 3 state residencies & use H& R
Block database.
