a lot of people here get faster speed than they paid for, a lot faster. how do you do that? get your own cable modem? tell them you know how to install it yourself and don't let them come to your house? I know someone paid for 25MB but gets almost 50, I would like to have that!!! also what kind of speed do you guys get with 5MB?

Nope. Even if you own your modem, the cable company pushes the configuration file to it which allows it access and sets the speed limit. The speed is controlled through your modem's firmware. There are ways to hack this, but it is very technical (requires soldering a custom interface cable into your modem) and has a high risk of your custom firmware (which you may have to figure out how to modify yourself) being detected. Not really easy or practical. Been awhile since I dug through the forums dedicated to this, so feel free to correct me.

I pay for 50 down and get 60. Previously I paid for 25 and got 28 to 30.

I deal shop, and both times I have upgraded from 25 down to 50 down I had to call Cox technical support and have them assist to recover my speed. The automated Cox menu will repush the config file to your router, but that didn't fix my speed either time. speedtest.net will confirm if you are receiving the advertised speed, call if you aren't.
