Default Jobs

I worked in a casino for 7 years. Most dealers on the strip make minimum wage plus tips. Tips are split between all dealers on a shift and paid out in a paycheck. They are not union so they have to pay for their own insurance. Cocktail servers make MUCH more than dealers. They are getting almost $12 per hour base pay and they get to keep all the tips they make themselves. They also get free insurance because it's a union job. I don't know about restaurant managers, but I would think a casino would pay more and there would be chances for advancement. I've been here 9 years from Long Island. I loved it at first. I was single and making double salary I made in NY. Now I can't wait to get out of here. The crime is skyrocketing even in the good areas and the extreme heat in the summer is unbearable. Hopefully you will like it. Good luck.

Restaurant jobs are easily obtained. Good ones are harder to come by. You start at a chain or a small local and work to the strip over time.

There is a reasonable cooking school plus the colleges also provide classes. UNLV is one of the top two schools in the US in hotel management.

Hair stylist jobs are commonly available and pay rather well I am told.

You likely have to live here to find a position unless you are extremely well credentialed. Vegas employers, particular that part of the economy, almost never hire from out of town.

Can your girlfriend continue as a hair stylist while she goes to school? I have known a few hair stylists here and they all do very well for themselves. Las Vegas may look cheaper than NY, but you have to remember that your pay will reflect that. There was also a big run-up in cost of living expenses here over the last few years, and like most of the country, the local wages haven't caught up. I don't know much about working in gaming, but the food service industry is very good here. There are plenty of restaraunts of all types and prices, so if your girlfriend likes that career path, I think she should do well in time. Like Olecapt mentioned, I think it will take time to work into one of the finer restaraunts. On a similar note, since you are considering coming out here, I'd suggest bringing little or no debt and at least several months of living expenses saved. It's growing, but it always has been growing, and getting a job isn't always as easy as most people coming here have been led to believe. Consider this, you're just one of the many thousands coming each month. However, good, honest hard-workers always do well. If you do make it out this way, good luck.

Guess we won't mention that they have to pay Union dues in order to get the FREE insurance.
