I'm about to visit Las Vegas for the first time and will probably be my only time so I want any tips I can get about the strip that I can't read on Vegas.com. Not a big gambler just hoping to see and do some exciting things I can remember. Looking for any FREE entertainment or cheap food. Also, if you have any advice as to where to stay on strip to help save on some of the walking.

Hmmm...Vegas.com covers a lot of things but here's some of my preferences from when I was a tourist on the Strip
1. Get off the Strip and go to Fremont on the Deuce bus or by taxi. Free bands and so many things I can't even begin to list...Lots on the web about the new East Fremont too as well as the free light show on the hour in the evening.
2. Free Race to Atlantis robotics show at the back of Caesars Forum every hour on the hour
3. Battista's Hole in the Wall Italian Restaurant behind the closed Bill's Gambling Hall midstrip
4. Happy Hour at Carnaval Court every afternoon and sit in the circle to watch the extreme bartenders
5. Not free, but the cheapest beer/drinks are at Casino Royale by Harrahs
6. Deuce bus to South Outlet Mall that is inside and cool and absolutely free to walk around in to get out of the heat.
7. Free shuttle to and from Harrahs' to Sam's Town to watch a movie or matinee for cheap and cool down. Big Sheplar's western wear store on the top floor of Sam's Town. Pretty good cheap buffet there too as well as TGIF.
Other than that not too much is free other than the attractions you find through Vegas.com regarding the Strip. Lots to suggest for sightseeing if you are renting a car but you haven't specified that.

Rent a car, so you're not a hostage of the strip. It means you can do Binionrat's list much more easily, and go way beyond that.

I second Binionrat's comments for the most part.

However, Battista's is horrific, unless you like paying $25 for a bowl of the most bland fettucini alfredo you've ever tasted.. And you'll feel like you need to donate to the old guy playing the accordion on top of all that..

Stay at Bally's, Flamingo, Monte Carlo.. These are low-mid priced hotels right in the center of the action..

Food here isn't cheap anymore..

Thank goodness!

The way this town is going to stay relevant is to offer excellent food (Rao's, B&B, Bouchon, Nobu, RM Seafood and similar) at reasonable prices. These restaurants are a little less expensive than their counterparts elsewhere in the country -- so visiting Las Vegas is one of the best way to sample the food from America's (and the world's) top chefs.

"Cheap food" brings in the absolute worst kind of visitor -- they care about price and not quality. No reasonable person can look at a $4.99 all you can eat buffet and think there's anything good about it.

A full stomach on a budget?

A 4.99 buffet sounds pretty gross to me but I'm sure there are those out there that would really appreciate it.

Bus Service: Deuce Double Decker

You can get almost anywhere in Vegas on the Deuce Double Decker bus for $6 2 hr or $8 for a 24 hr pass (24 hrs starts when you get on bus) or $20 for a 3 day pass. The 3 day passes are not available on the bus. You must buy them at a Kiosk machine located in Front of Slots of Fun Casino, MGM Grand Casino, Las Vegas Convention Center and the South Strip Terminal which is South of the Mandalay Bay Casino. Good on any Deuce bus any direction. Ask for a RTC Pocket Guide that will tell you the different routes. You can also buy online prior to your trip at http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/transit/fare_passes_online.cfm.

On the OP's requrest for free, BeeCee, I mentioned Battista's Hole in the Wall as it serves unlimited FREE red and white wine LOL. We go there to party as the food is okay but why pay for wine, especially if you're going with a group and just want to get a glow-on and eat and drink for a few hours. :-) Hell, I could eat pretzels, but if the wine is free...I'm there.

Ellis Island is another place with cheap eats. Steak dinner with a beer for about $7.00 or prime rib for $10.00. It's not a fancy steak dinner but it's good!

Welcome to Village Pub and Ellis Casinos!
