We are quite possibly returning to Vegas on August 1. We lived in Vegas during 2004-05, then returned to our city of origin. When we left, our apartment complex tried to charge us about two grand in what I consider to be bogus fees. We contested the charges. Round and round it went, eventually it ended up in collections. We were contacted several times by the collection agency, we kept asking for documentation of the charges which was never provided.

No eviction, no withholding of rent - just a bunch of charges the landlord tried to claim after the fact.

Eventually the collection agency itself went out of business and we have heard nothing since.

Obviously we are not planning to rent from the same landlord again, but I am wondering if I should expect problems when trying to find a place. I haven't started yet as it's still questionable whether we will actually go. I have a job in Vegas waiting for me but my partner doesn't yet.

We have three years of solid rental history in our current city.

So from a landlord perspective, is this a problem?

Did you check your credit or eviction history? If you are going to rent an apartment or from a property management company, yes I think you will have a problem..

My credit history is good, it does not show on there. We were not evicted, so there is no eviction on my record.

So they didn't get a judgment or an eviction? You're fine.

That's not to say they couldn't go after you but often times it's not not worth the landlord's time to chase after a debt that will not be paid and effectively ruin someone's already bad credit.
