And a long report: Substance Abuse
Yes it's out here. But just not on the scale of those mid west cities. Until they start locking up the ingredients to make the stuff, then it's probably manageable. I remember Ogden, Utah having a methamphetamine response and training team.(picture swat team in haz-mat suits). Seen those guys in action plenty of times, they would shut down an entire city street not because of a terrorist threat, not because of a bomb threat, not because of a hostage situation...all because of a meth lab tip. You just don't see this level of use or mini factories in LV.(lack of basements is one main reason labs are not more common in Vegas, I have heard, something to do with controlling temp).

Fire department, EMT and the cops get tailored training and certifications on dealing with meth in Missouri and those neighboring states.

Meth users are one thing, meth labs are another. Those labs ain't no joke. You can't even live in an ex-meth lab home safely. When was the last time a lab blew up in the valley?(real question because I do not know)

What you guys fail to understand is that literally "TONS" of high grade methamphetamine pours across the U.S Mexican Border...Meth labs are not even a fraction of what they were a decade ago. The Mexican cartels currently supply's upwards of +90% of the Meth consumed in the United States. Heck its even surfacing in Canada let alone Nevada or Utah.

Von949, The reason the Midwestern states like Missouri have a huge problem might have to do with the vast wooded areas & low population density in the country side. Barstow, California & other small desert towns in the South West also have issues with meth labs. Whats more dangerous then the actual meth labs are the people running these clandestine deadly labs.

After doing some quick reading it does seem that Missouri's "climate" is ripe for labs. Over 2000 labs busted yearly in the state alone. For Nevada, from what I can find, we are at 2 for 2011. It definitely is a drug trade issue, at least for this state.

The "war on drugs".

Yes there is higher demand in Missouri & not enough supply. It's also not on a well established drug corridor like Las Vegas. Nevada is flanked on 2 sides by major meth distribution states of California & Arizona which in turn have a common border with Mexico.

Meth labs are mostly out of style.. A simple technique has been developed that allows simple production of small amounts in a bathroom.

unless producing on a huge scale nobody does a meth lab anymore. It is shake and bake in a motel room.

Is there a local list of homes that used to be labs? Do you have access to something like that? Or is it so rare here that a list is unnecessary?

Looks like a couple thousand homes registered as ex-meth labs in Missouri alone.

The war on drugs has been an utter failure in my opinion. Its has been a perpetual war of attrition with casualties mounting on both sides. 42 Years later & over a trillion dollars just on incarceration & law enforcement, not to mention trillions more in economic losses. Its time to take another approach & formalize a different plan of action as the current plan has been failing.

With-out a doubt the war on drugs has added a substantial amount of debt on top of the mountain of national debt already incurred. Have many king-pins & drug lords been taken out of commission?? Yes...But as soon as one is taken off the streets 100 more pop up in his place it's a vicious cycle consuming our resources to no end .

On the flip side if drugs were some how instantly decriminalized over night it would lead to an even bigger catastrophe!! It would create a multi-billion dollar vacuum & a chaotic struggle to get a piece of the drug trade among the domestic gangs & organized criminals. We will bare witness to one of the bloodiest moments in American history, if the ban were ever lifted suddenly!

I don't believe reversing the war on drugs at least a complete reversal would be ideal at this moment. This is a example of the consequences when the laws of physics are not heeded -->"for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"<--. Apparently the war on drugs has had the opposite effect of what was initially intended. Devastating both the United States & Mexico's resources in the process & bringing to power a formidable cartel that is armed to the teeth & dominates North Americas drug trade. Its a catch 22 at this moment & it's very apparent who has lost this war!!

It appears the marijuana situation is well on its way to resolution. Five years?

The obviously addictive drugs would require government run medical clinics. It has been done successfully in Europe.

I don't think there have been a half dozen meth labs found in the last couple of years in Las Vegas.

The more difficult one is probably the use of prescription drugs for recreational purposes. This is the one where Las Vegas has a significant and difficult problem. I doubt though it is the source of other crime.

So back to the original OP's question...

Does LV have a methamphetamine epidemic on it's hands?

I think LV has a drug problem just like any other major city. But LV does not even make the top ten meth bust list.

The 10 states with the most meth lab busts

Quote:
Missouri 2,096
Tennessee 1,687
Indiana 1,437
Kentucky 1,188
Oklahoma with 902
Illinois 584
Iowa 382
Michigan 352
North Carolina 340
South Carolina 265

Maybe we have a growing "grow house" epidemic going on instead. At least in Summerlin.
