Auction Action, Sin City Edition: Barrett-Jackson may hold auction in Las Vegas - Autoblog

Back in May we reported that Barrett Jackson was considering a move to Las Vegas after the Scottsdale city council refused to sell Craig Jackson the land he needed to build a permanent facility for his auction house. Nothing had been solidified after several meetings with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, but Jackson claimed to have a very positive response from Sin City officials. Now it seems that an auction in Vegas will indeed happen. Daniel Strohl from Hemmings Auto Blogs posted a photo of credentials and an information packet with "Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas" on the cover. Whether or not it will replace or simply supplement the famous Scottsdale auction is unknown, but we'll find out on October 29th, probabaly at the SEMA Show, when Barrett-Jackson makes an official announcement. For the record, we're behind any proposal that gives us another reason to visit Vegas

This would be a great event to have in town.

The blog reports that "an auction in Vegas will indeed happen." Auctions (on house foreclosures) happen ALL the time in Vegas these days!

It'll be interesting to see how this winter's auction turns out, whether it's in Scottsdale or Las Vegas. The coverage on Speed Channel and some of the insane prices people were paying for cars kept increasing until a big peak at the January 2006 auction. After that, everyone thought the 2007 auction would be even better. However, while the total sales were higher (due to a larger number of cars sold), there weren't the huge money sales, and even some of the cars that were selling for $200k+ started sliding back down. This year will really show whether 2006 was a fluke, or if 2007 was- personally, I think the prices will continue to go down- there's only so many people who will spend $200k for a car they won't drive, and only so many that will sit in the audience and bid "top that" with each other. I think they're starting to get their fill.

A friend of mine (another automotive nut) and I have always wanted to drive down just to be at the event and see some of the cars. If it does happen to come here, which it really looks like it gonna happen, I'll be there for sure.

I must admit...and I'm not much of a car buff...the coverage on the Speed Channel of the auctions is addicting to watch!

Even more entertaining at BJAA is to occasionally see cars that my father bought or sold used for around $500 in the 1960s that many people considered clunkers at the time, to roll up onto the auction platform and sell for hundreds of thousands. My fav BJAA sale was a 1961 Chrysler 300 sedan that sold for somewhere around $300K, which my father sold off an identical model of in the late 1960s for maybe $400. Who ever would have predicted that 40 years ago.

It's just the nature of collecting. The cars are much fewer now than they were when they were built. Heck back in the 50's you could buy an old Model A Ford for about $25. Probably in another 20 years, you'll be able to buy a rusty 2007 Mercedes S320 for about $2500. Then in another 20 years, it will cost a million dollars.
