I'd like to find a reputable computer guy or shop to assemble a computer for my son for Christmas from my specs. Anyone know someone who is good at this?

Agreed. Why pay someone to do it for you? The hardest part about DIY computer building is choosing the right processor for the motherboard. And that's simple. The rest is just grounding yourself often, turning a screwdriver, and pushing plugs into sockets.

Is it really cheaper to build your own these days rather than buying it through the pc vendors? They are fairly flexible with customization and warranty the product.

Just went through this - in the past I've found it cheaper to build, but for some reason this time I didn't. Particularly when you factor in the price of the OS, which is pre installed on the factory assembled pc's it seemed a no-brainer to just purchase the pc. It is quite easy to assemble yourself if you decide to go that route. There are plenty of youtube videos to walk you through it as well.

You can buy OEM versions of the OS from the various web vendors, if you buy certain parts (for the PC build) from them.

I've built my last two, and enjoyed it. One huge advantage - total control of what goes on the hard disk. You don't have to deal with all the demo-ware the commercial builders dump on their boxes.

I'm great at software (modest, aren't I ), but I don't like working with hardware very much. The problem with building your own is the tuning. Is this a gaming system you are trying to build for your kiddo?
