I agree -- parents need to spend at least a month here, preferably late July, early August. Just to see how bad it gets. Google "vacation house las vegas" and rent a place for a month. Rent a car for a month. At the end of that month, they'll know whether they'd like it here or not.

Just don't go during Oct. or Nov. -- those are the two best months of the year. And it would be quite the bait-and-switch to fall in love with October, and then get blown away by the convection oven that is July and August.
October wasnt hot enough for my liking. Yes, it was nice, 88 and sunny every day I was there...but I would have perferred it to be hotter. Not everyone hates the heat. Just sayin'.

Or is the Strip so central to Vegas that anyone who doesn't like the Strip probably wouldn't like Vegas?
The best way to learn about places is the chamber of commerce sites that may give information that your parents are looking for without actually going there. Other wise the ultimate way to learn about the different area's is to drive around them and check them out.

But we love the area, because each time we come out, we rent a car and do what locals do: shop, use local restaurants, go to movies, etc.

We bought real estate a couple of years ago. A professional realtor manages it for us. When we are ready to use it ourselves we will likely be there 5-6 months per year (not in the summer). But we know what summers are like there so there would be not surprises for us if we did stay there in June or July. One of our daughters got married there many years ago in June.

Because the room rates and flights are currently at historic lows, we come out three times a year. Car rentals are dirt cheap as well. We typically put 200-300 miles on a rental in three or four days, getting to know the valley as do the locals.

We can't wait for that day when we can call ourselves Las Vegas snowbirds. We have worked hard since we were kids and have saved our money every paycheck from day one. God willing, we will have the health to enjoy life in Las Vegas for a while.

Retirement to Clark County is one of the best-kept secrets in this entire country. No kidding. The potential is outstanding.

Had you been living here as long as I have you wouldn't think it was a secret. We grew by about 1.5 million people in 20 years from about 1987 to 2007, and probably at least half are retirees. There are several "retirement communities", like the various Sun Cities, here IN LAS VEGAS that I'm sure are each larger than any city in my birth state, and several other states I can think of.
