Newer homeowner here with wall to wall carpeting that is stained, but has decent pile. Can't really afford to purchase new carpeting so I was wondering if having it dyed would be an option. Has anyone ever dyed their carpeting and what was your experience like? Was it very expensive? Happy with the results? Could you recommend a company who you used?

As always, appreciate any information. Thank you!

I don't have any first hand knowledge of aftermarket or secondary market carpet dying, but I have worked in highend carpet and rug mills for over a decade. most 12' goods(wall to wall carpet) are manufactured in undyed skeins of whatever material you are going to make you carpet out of, even wool.... then those finished rolls are dyed to specifications. I would imagine a secondary market dyer would use a similar dye and process, but on a much smaller scale by hand. it is colorfast and fairly cheap process in the overall cost of the finished product. getting the dye to lay evenly and without "pooling" (concentration of areas where the dye will pool the color) would be my first concern. also you are going to need to go darker each time you dye. I suspect that it is like many things, in that you get what you pay for... better dyers are going to be more expensive and will probably be more geared towards upscale clients that can afford new carpets, but like the existing pile and weight and only want a color change.

I'm going to take this opportunity to show a couple of my designs.

You'd probably save money and be happier with the results if you just replaced it - that is, after all, the Las Vegas way. New carpet every few years is almost required around here.

We replaced most of our carpet with a very nice tile that works well in our Southwest style home, and now we wish we had gone with it throughout the house from day one when it was being built. It looks so much better than carpet, and is easy to maintain. Most people think it would be too cold on their feets - it ain't. And it allows for use of some nice looking throw rugs.

The PM recommended we dye the taupe carpet in our rental one shade darker. It couldn't of been more that $250 for a 2000 sqft house, or I would of probably remembered. I didn't get to see the actual result but there have been no complaints. I assume they just put the dye in the carpet cleaning machine. The trick will be in finding someone who knows what they are doing. You might shop suggestions from a Property Manager.

This. I've never done it myself but I know two people that have carpet cleaning companies and both dye rugs.

I would want to see longer term results of the company doing the work. Years ago I had a commercial carpet dyed from a lighter beige to medium brown. It only turned out OK. Then, the sunlight coming in the picture windows after awhile faded it and showed streaks.
