Bike the side streets then use the bus for passage down the main thoroughfares.
Not a bad point. The CAT busses have the bike rack in the front of them.

Default It's alright

I've biked here and it's not bad...I've felt much safer here than back in Denver...even on the multi-lane streets like Charleston were okay...the lanes are wide and cars have many lanes to choose so they don't seemed peeved that the right lane is taken it seems.
My issue with the bus/bike combo is that in the time I'd spend waiting at the stop I probably could've got a few more miles in by bike.
The only reason I don't bike commute for work is that I wear a suit and there is nowhere to shower at work ... I'm not about to stew in the suit all night after riding in.

Overall I think Las Vegas is very bike friendly...just stay away from the touristy roads...they don't watch where they're driving!
OTOH When I do go on the strip I do try and pair with Metro bike cops if I can...but they are on mountain bikes so I have to slow down some....

I have a 56t chain-ring on the front so on level straightaways I can get my fat-butt up to 30mph sometimes for a bit until my age/weight kicks in and I need to drift!

It's funny....on the strip I tend to stay right with traffic or faster if it's heavy.

This is only my opinion, but you would have to be a total moron to ride a bicycle on the major roads here. I know this, because there have been a more than a few times that I have almost hit them within inches, especially when they fly up on me on the right when I am making a right on red looking to the left. Oh well, even against my old Ford Escort they will be dead, not me.

No, I was not drunk. You know what I am talking about as I have posted about this before. Regardless, even if I was drunk (which I wasn't), there are many who are, and that makes riding a bike beyond stupid knowing there are many people who are out on the roads. At least with a car, you have some protection. Throughout my life, I have been hit by multiple drunk drivers myself while in a car. I can say without a doubt, I would have been severely injured or dead if I was on a bicycle. No thanks.....

Default Bah humbug!

^^^^ No offense LVD but MOST of your posts are negative!

Yes, I too have been in accidents where I would have been killed if on a bicycle but honestly if I WAS on a bicycle the accident wouldn't have happened...

You can find the negatives with everything in life....I choose the positive.

I don't think biking is any worse here than other places! If you think so then don't bike or just bike in a gated community...then again there you might have some little entitled 16 year old with a graduation present racing down the street!

This is Las Vegas...EVERYTHING is a gamble! Then again everything is a gamble everywhere!

More or less, I am realistic, and most people do not like that as they construe it as negative. As you know, I grew up in Phoenix and I used to ride a bike until I was 16. I have also been hit by a car on a bike on the same exact scenario I posted above. Luckily, it was more of a tap, and I was not injured. It was certainly a wake up call though. Considering how much more drunks, druggies, etc there is here than other cities (including Phoenix), I would not even consider it IMO.

^^^ Fair enough, but that doesn't make those of us who choose to ride morons!

Sorry about that as I should have worded it differently. Those who choose to ride bicycles in Las Vegas are high risk takers, better?

FYI, Emergency-room doctors and nurses call motorcycles "donorcycles."

In a thread about bicycle safety, two people have raised their hand and said, "I got hit by a car riding my bicycle on the streets of Las Vegas."

I could never recommend someone commute by bike. It's simply too risky. I don't think that makes bicycle riders morons. But I do think it means they have an inflated sense of security.
