I had always wondered this and even though I'm gone now...I still wonder

Why are the a/c units placed on the roofs of single family homes?

Down here they are placed on the ground

Ours is a single family, single story home and our a/c units are on the ground, although I've seen several older homes have them on the roof.

I see, I remember seeing homes off Craig and 95 and other homes off Washington and Bufflalo with coolers on the roof. Seems (looking back now) that the roof units were on homes up until the mid 90s or so. The room I rented in Centennial Hills back in June 2010 when I first got there was mid 90s construction and had a unit on the roof

They have been on the ground here in FL as long as I can remember. Many homes in New England dont even have central a/c at all. And the heating system is usually done by oil or hot water pipes

Thank God I have lived in more modern places like ORL and LV

Originally the A/C units were placed on the roofs to keep out snakes, scorpions and oher vermin. In about 2000, the builders begin installing them on the ground for easier access and cheaper installaion.

My house (and most of Spanish Trail) was built in the mid to late 1980s and all of the houses here have the ac units on the ground.
