Las Vegas is situated in the far eastern portion of the Pacific Time Zone. One issue this creates is that the sun seems to set too early in the winter.

I was thinking, wouldn't it be better if Las Vegas switched to Mountain Time and dropped DST? If Las Vegas were to do this, the sun would set an hour later than it does now during the winter. At the same time, dropping DST will make it match the West Coast during the summer, and would match Arizona time year round.

What do you think about this?

Makes too much sense. It'll never happen.

DST is a 19th century construct for a society that had not yet invented alarm clocks.

Once upon a time, noon was whatever time the sun transited in any given location.

When you get down to it, it all boils down to financial markets. Seeing as we can go either way, what banking cities make more sense for us to sync with? Los Angeles and San Francisco? Or Denver and Salt Lake City?

Why? do we even turn the clocks back anymore!!!! This needs to be changed just think how much energy can be saved and how people can be more productive instead of it being dark by 5:00PM or earlier. During the energy crunch in the early 70's we stopped turning the clocks back for the above reason.

I think we get more value sharing a timezone with CA VS CO and UT. But I agree it gets dark too early. I wish we would just keep DST year round.

I'd like to point out Wendover Nevada already is on MST. That town shifted years ago to better connect with all the Utah folks.

My idea of switching to Mountain Time and dropping DST is essentially the same thing. This is exactly how Arizona does it, where we are on the same time as Las Vegas and the West Coast during the summer, but an hour later in the winter.

Yes we absolutely should go to Mountain Standard Time and drop DST. Longer sun in the winter when we want it and less in the summer when we don't want it.

The time difference is not going to bother Californians. If they want to come on the weekends they will come. They are not going to say "oh I want to go to Vegas but they changed to MST so I won't". And, without DST, we would match their time half the year anyway.
