Ahh I see, too bad. Hopefully one day SOMEONE will be a catalyst for change.

I'm not taking anything away from the casinos, they are the bread and butter, the economic engine that drives the economy. But we have to branch out into other areas as well. I know, I know that's a tired ole song around here.

If those casino owners think that diversifying the attractiveness of LV is not in their best interest they might as well go buy some rooms in the Harmon as an investment. If people come to visit Vegas, they stay in hotels, buy from Vegas food providers and stay in hotels that have casinos and buffets. They won't go hiking and water skiing then come back to the hotel and eat home made sandwiches at the Holiday Inn without a casino. GIVE ME A FUDGING break. When families and groups plan a vacation or a trip, what is the first thing they discuss? What the Fugg do we do there? Let's go gamble, no let's go moutain biking and camping, let's go lay out on the beach, let's go .. The more Vegas can fit into those list, the better the city will be. It's gambling but also all these things. Vegas needs diversity in attractions besides stupid night clubs and bar scenes outside of gambling.

There are a lot of people that are not aware of the vast amount of outdoor recreational activities right here in the city and a few hours drive away. Market that as well.

On the flip side, they need to better market the "business deals get done here" idea as well. Those are three distinct and separate areas that they need to market too.
Most definitley

Both of you have some good points but most of the people that come to Vegas come here to do activities that they cant do in their home towns. 9 times out of 10 there is no Vegas type strip in somebody's hometown but I bet there is some place to camp out or a place close enough to do some mountain biking. Why come all the way to Vegas to do what they could do back home?

On another note, when I go camping I am usually focused on just camping. You know the nature, outdoors, being lazy, quality time with the family etc. To throw gambling, shows, bars, hotels in the mix would not flow well with the camping experience. This at least goes for me and a whole of of the people I know that go camping.

Im sure everyone is different though.

Some more thoughts but most other states promote the wilderness thing not the cities. I live only 40 miles from Lake Placid NY 1980 and 1932 winter Olympic site. They were known as a winter play land only. Well to cut through the chase they started to die on the vine trying to use just the winter thing. So they started to invest and promote the summer stuff. Examples now they have a huge Iron man event, one of the biggest horse equestrian shows and competition in the NE USA, a huge October fest and many other events the summer stuff has taken over as more tourist than the winter stuff. So for Las Vegas they need more big venue Sports events. A pro football team or baseball team would do the trick. You are talking for example a home game for Baseball about 10 million $$$ for the economy of that area each game. Las Vegas has a very flexable weather conditions to hoist many events. Just some thoughts from seeing other areas make other things work for them.

Maybe it's just me, but I am not going to fly thousands of miles to go see a baseball game. There are plenty of closer places to go see a game. Like von949 said, I am going to Vegas to do things I can't do closer to home.

such as GAMBLE

Everyone loves to come here with the latest thing to SOLVE Las VEGAS's problems....our problems could be solved by carpetbaggers not trying to change Las Vegas.

B.T.W. ALL, it's LAS VEGAS not vegas

The ad being the only exception.....you will RARELY hear a true resident call it anything but LAS VEGAS and the strip is only a couple of miles long, the rest [NORTH and SOUTH of the Strip] is Las Vegas Blvd So til ya get to FrEmont Street [not FrEEmont St] then it becomes Las Vegas Blvd NO.

The State, and other entities, promotes all those other attractions. The LVCA uses casino money to promote casinos to the public and to business leaders directly. There are at least three, maybe more, departments at UNLV alone that do constant surveys, and I mean daily, to discover what resonates with visitors, not to mention the surveys done by LVCA. If rafting the Colorado would attract people into casinos then the LVCA would promote rafting on the Colorado.

I imagine that more business deals are struck in Las Vegas than anywhere outside of New York or LA, and that's because we have ...what is it, 18,000 or so? or even more? ....conventions and trade shows a year. That advertising is being done, but it doesn't appeal to the masses. It goes directly to those responsible for selecting Las Vegas for their meetings.

Las Vegas has been successful because of successful advertising and marketing developed over 80 years of experience. I bet there is not one marketing major posting regularly on this forum. But collectively, our ideas have been heard and used or rejected over the past 80 years. Note that the present fad of maxing out your credit cards on $1,000 bottles of champagne is something begun in places like New York and LA. Now we seem to be attracting those people here. Before that it was families. Before that it was people looking for the "western experience". For advertising to work you have to offer people what they will easily accept, not what you think is best for them.

Many years ago, even before my time, a movie starring child star, Mickey Rooney, came up with the "Hey, I've got an idea, let's put on a show," line that is still used today to mock people thinking it is all so simple. It's not rocket surgery, but it takes more than one guy with an idea. And the people who market and advertise Las Vegas are pretty good at what they do ...obviously. The trick for an ad agency is to keep the *******s that pay the bills out of the creative process, as those guys usually haven't got a creative bone in their bodies.

I am not a resident, so I'll call it Vegas, just like I call it New York and not New York City. As long as people understand what I am referring to, what difference does it make?

You wouldn't believe how many people had told they won't go to Las Vegas because there's nothing to do there but gamble. An advertising campaign targeting other activities just might get them to visit and spend money.
