Hello

I am buying a new place and need some furniture. I'm not too picky but do like simple, nice things.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Phil

There's RC Wiley, Ashleys, and Walker furniture along with lots of little mom and pop furniture stores. Look in the big phone book that was delivered recently.
Also, if you can get access, there's the world market building with furniture downtown.

We bought most of our furniture and applicances from RC Willey and are have been really happy with them. I think they would meet your desire for "simple, nice things." They sell what I would consider "middle of the road" furniture -- not cheap junk, but not super luxury either. Also, their selection is huge, and everything we wanted was available for delivery within just a few days or less. Their 5 Star Express Delivery is a a nice feature too. You pay $59 for one year of unlimited deliveries.

We picked up some things from Colleen's Consignment - they were brand new off the showroom from World Market. High quality. Inexpensive price. Fast delivery.

I went the "purchase all the tools from a cabinet shop and build your own" route. But I would shop Colleens and similar before going to RC Willey and the like.

My problem with LV furniture stores -- all of them -- is the ridiculous mark up. I make my own so I know how much things cost. This stuff is the lowest-common denominator without resorting to IKEA. And much of it is no better than pre-assembled IKEA. Veneered plywood and particle board -- or veneered poplar or basswood if they want to call it "hardwood furniture."

Joints are usually dowels or biscuits -- they'll machine some dovetail drawers for some "higher end" pieces, but even those look "off."

Problem is, REALLY GOOD furniture (wood, at least) has to be made here, or somewhere with a similar climate with hardwood that was kiln-dried and continued to dry in our low humidity environment. Most of the good stuff we brought with us when we moved split, checked, or shrunk to the point where the piece was ruined.

I was able to fix some loose joints, plane and re-glue split panels for some things. But most of it was trashed.

I assume that's why most of the furniture I see is low-end around here.
