Even people with a bank account sometimes cash checks there. All that matters is if they know of the employer and its drawn on a business account. If your boss is writing checks from his personal account and is running a small business they won't cash them.

When you cash it at a casino you'll almost always at least get a free drink coupon out of it, sometimes you can win a bit more. If you leave with your money is up to you.

I have a bank account and I cash my checks at Station casinos. I also do not gamble.

Why do I do it?

When I cash the check I get a free spin at their reward center. Prizes are: Free play, Points, T-Shirt, free cocktail and free buffet are the ones I remember the most.

On top of the free spin I get a guranteed amount of points put on my players card. This I use for free Buffet. It does not take long and if I want to take people out I can always use the free buffet.

The casinos used to promote the heck out of that in the days before electronic banking. Cash your check, spin a wheel, and maybe win a big prize ...but whatever you do, spend some of it there. Now anyone with any sense has direct deposit.

Another thing they did was set you up with check cashing privileges after a credit check with your bank. I had a buddy that worked in the Stardust cage, and he set me up with credit there even though my checking account was still in West Virginia. My first day in town I had a check cashing card on file, and a Stardust credit card. He told me whatever I did, if I couldn't pay anything else, to be sure that credit card was paid up for his sake. I'd use it a couple of times a year just to keep it active.

But the best thing was being able to cash checks at any casino just because I had a card on file at the Stardust. And by card, I mean an index card in a box on the counter behind the cashiers. If I wanted to cash a check at the Riv, or the El Cortez, or the Showboat, they'd just call the Stardust cage and someone would flip through a bunch of file cards to find mine for approval. Usually after I did that once, whatever casino I was at would give me a credit card and check cashing privileges for their place just on the strength of having it at the Stardust. No forms were ever filled out. I have credit cards for casinos that have been long gone for years.

Oh, you know what? That must have been my father because I'm not that old.

When I was working downtown last year. I elected not to use direct deposit since El Cortez was giving back 5% of the net back in slot play for check cashing. Free money that I used and parlayed into a couple grand on a few ocasions. The other times I left once the free play was gone.

Thanks for all the responses so far everyone...

All makes perfect sense.

By the way, is it just me or does everyone else on here spell 'cheque' funny

Just you wacky Canadians! Cheque in American English is spelled check.

We had you pegged as a foreigner from the get-go. I have a friend who used to cash her check at a casino before she had direct deposit. I never really got it, but all the perks kind of make sense if you're into gambling. I don't think I'd do it myself. I don't like walking around with more than 20 bucks.

I often cash checks at Stations. It's easy and it's available 24x7.

Cashing a check there doesn't mean you have to gamble. I usually get 1000 free points that I save for a free meal.
