Grass is starting to grow through the gravel in my front yard. What's the best way to get rid of it? I'm not going to hire anyone. I'll just weed it by hand if necessary, but I was wondering what the standard course of action is - more gravel, weed killer, etc??

Weeding a plant by hand is always the most effective. It has no chance of ever growing back. All the weedkillers advertise that they don't hurt grass if I'm not mistaken.

Use a post emergent. Some target specific weeds while others are non-selective & will destroy anything and everything green; weeds, your grass, flowers or shrubs etc..Read the label.

When you change the oil on your car you could dump the old sludge on it ...or, best way is to pull out the roots. Especially grass which grows from roots that travel underground. Expect to do this for about ten years before it gets the idea you don't want it.

Hmmm.... Indeed - the HOA docs say nothing about oil in the yard, just the driveway...

Use the best ground clear you can buy and put it on in Feb/early March and 48 hours before any rain or water runoff. Never had much of a problem when I did that, maybe a stray weed or two for the rest of the year.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

I also have a bunch of tiny leaves all over certain areas of the gravel. What's the best way to get 'em up?

Sorry for the basic questions - having moved here from NJ, I'm not used to landscaping with gravel...

If you're gonna go the weed killer route, a lot of people use regular household bleach on all the weeds in their yard. It's actually more effective than expensive weed killers. I've been doing this for the last couple of years. Anyone heard of any downsides to this technique? The smell of bleach goes away as soon as it dries. And it doesn't seem to discolor the stones....
