Thanks for reading. I'm a recent college graduate and I'm planning on moving to the Orlando area in April. I've been doing EXTENSIVE research for the past months about the area. I have many job options as I am willing to be flexible and I am planning a trip in February before I move to secure a job. I've traveled to the area a lot for vacations, and I KNOW that it is totally different to live there than when on vacation, but how else can I find out if I like it than trying it out? I have the means and I'm going for it.

ANYWAY, I'll get to the point. I've been reading pretty much every post on Orlando and a lot of you seem very harsh. I went to school in Boston and then lived in Los Angeles for a year and from what I've read, Orlando is just about the same as any other major city. I think some people just express their negative experiences very heavily on here because they have the means to do so (non-confrontational). I appreciate the positive responses that people have given to other posts.

A couple questions:
1) I've been reading a lot about MetroWest. In current day, is it still as bad as people say it is? The prices are extremely reasonable and it's a very attractive place and I like the idea of living in a master planned community (coming from New England, I hate it here). Everyone says it's SO hard to live in Orlando, but go and try to live in LA, Boston or New York. I couldn't get a "decent" 1 bed apartment in a bad/maybe-okay part of town in LA or Boston for under $1200. I'm done with the whole roommates thing. Getting a condo in Orlando for $650 with amenities is a STEAL. Seriously, try living on the West Coast or in New England. You'd be in hell. Just my opinion.

2) I'm a gay guy, I've heard that Orlando has a pretty big gay culture. How are gays treated down there in everyday life? Any areas that the gays tend to flock to (living or hanging-out wise?) What areas do you recommend living in for a young, single guy, rent under $700?

3) Here's a list of some apartments I'm considering, can anyone comment on any of them? (I've checked out apartmentratings.com and all the reviews are SO conflicting it's insane.)

Arbors at Lee Vista
Fountains at Millenia
Lee Vista Club Apts.
Arbors at Maitland
Estates at Maitland Summit
Sun Lake Apts.

Thanks SO much. I admire you wanting to help others in their quests to Orlando! Hope we can talk soon.

-T
btw...what did you like/not like about Orlando in your findings? DavieJ89 moved to LV from Orlando a few months ago. He may have some useful insight.

]Don’t buy into this juice]bullsh@t[, It’s a thing of the past. Getting a job right now is determination and a little bit of luck. Keeping the job depends on your attitude, diversity and being open to change and accept new ideas. Casinos pretty much operate the same way no matter where they are in the world. The casino corporate culture really varies depending on who you work for. If you’re willing to take a risk and get your feet wet. Then the Las Vegas is for you. Since I started in 1988, I have held three directorships in some of the largest resorts here in town. It was all due to my hard work, being dependable and always accepting the constant changes in the industry.

Maybe because Davie never applied or was persistent enough. All you need to do is get your foot through the door and show management that you’re willing to learn and take the initiative and show them that you want to advance to middle management. If you’re an out of work table games dealer, food server, casino cashier, slot floor person ect ect and is not willing to move up. Then you will be with the rest of the %15 unemployed wanting what they had in the past until business demands dictate the rehire of additional staff. HR is looking for outgoing personal with great customer service skills. HR does not care where you acquired these skills in customer service. Casino gaming is not rocket science. You can learn and advance if you have the desire and ambition.

How strongly do you advise against the OP moving to Vegas without a job in hand? What do you think his chances are (% age wise) of finding a position in this Economy?

very strongly against.. without vegas experience, slim to none.. there are 100 people for every app, and they will take only the best...

unless the op doesnt care working for 10 bucks an hour or less.. then his chances are 25%

Which types of jobs are you talking about when you refer to the
100 applicants: 1 position ratio?

Are the corporate jobs with the gaming operators (Finance, Marketing, etc.) just as tough as the service jobs that are 'in the field' and dealing with customers in a more direct manner?

Thumbs down whoaa

whoaa negative nancies...
we got WAAY off on a tangent there...
i mean i did expect this coming to this forum, but jeez, so quickly and so swiftly? do you all have nothing else to do but stomp on people's ambitions? (maybe because you don't have any of your own & you sit at a desk all day making a 'career' out of stomping on people's FORUM posts!)

some comments...
FIRST of all, JFK, my friend who lived in orlando moved back here, so i never ended up going...
SECOND, who the hell is davie? and why are we talking about hiring him? way to bring it into the wrong post.
THIRDLY, THANK YOU mojavedxer for having at least a BIT of faith in people who have direction and don't just want to sit around and be handed a position... also thank you for your accurate description of HR departments in the casino industry.
LOOK, i'm not looking for a high-paying, high-level job here... all i asked about was a front desk agent or supervisor position... and isn't $10/hr kind of what entry-level casino workers expect in vegas? (that's the impression i was under.)
FOURTHLY- honestly, the whole "JUICE" thing is reaaallly old and if you still subscribe to that idea (or that phrase!) it's no wonder you haven't gotten anywhere.
FIFTHLY, whoever said anything about "no casino experience"?? i just explained how i work at mohegan sun...? google it? ... in a tie for the largest casino in the country and currently #1 in market matrix scores (if you know what those are...) for US luxury casino hotels??
enough said... you don't need to have "VEGAS" tattooed on your forehead to get a job in Vegas when you already know your ****.
All i wanted was to possibly network with some people who are ACTUALLY in the industry like mojavedxer seems to be... all the rest of you who are just spewing hearsay should just take it somewhere else, and allow us to network & bounce ideas off of eachother like adults do.

done. thanks, next please

I gave honest answers to the best of my knowledge, but that knowledge is limited as I don't reside in Vegas or work in the hospitality/gaming/leisure industry.

Airics has a track record of reliable, honest posts and experience in the hospitality field, so I asked him some questions about his assessment of your prospects in LV. There's no reason to believe that his answers were not honest. I wouldn't consider any posts from Airics as stomping on anyone's ambitions.

Davie (Daviej89 I think) is someone who recently moved from Orlando to Vegas. I advised against it, but he moved and it seems to have worked out well.

Just b/c someone doesn't think you can't find a job doesn't mean you won't find one. His advice that you should not move doesn't mean you can't. You're going to get a variety of opinions in a thread like this. Just take them for what they're worth and do what you think is best. I don't think anyone is trying stomp your ambitions or discourage you from finding a career in Vegas b/c they don't have a career of their own. When someone gives a negative assessment of your success rate, it's not (in and of itself) an insult. You should hope that we give honest answers. I, for one, have and think the others did as well. You're going to get responses you don't like, but there's no need to be offended by it.
